Chapter 7:

Sure enough on Monday, Adele comes to school looking totally different. Her once waist length long brown locks, chopped off and replaced with a blunt bob that finishes just above her shoulders. It suits her but something just doesn't seem right. Firstly – Adele loves her long hair, or should I say loved? I know I'm a boy and everything, but surely these decisions don't just happen overnight. Right?

At recess I walk up to the gang who are all seated around the giant peppercorn tree next to the basketball court.

'Hey,' Liam says as I slide into an empty space between Sam and Lucy.

'Hey yourself!' I reply. 'Nice haircut by the way.' I say, turning to face Adele. She automatically flushes red and replies bashfully, 'thanks Josh.' Weird.

Emma shoots me a pointed look and then just as abruptly turns around to face Lucy and ask her about her weekend. Typical. I obviously am missing something here, although I have absolutely no idea what.

'So are you ready for the French oral tomorrow?' I ask the group casually, trying to change the topic.

'Yeah, I guess so.' Liam replies. 'If I can remember how to pronounce basketball and hamburger I'm good to go.'

'Ha!' Lucy jokes. 'Typical boy language. Right Emma?'

In response Emma smiles sweetly and replies. 'Affirmative.'

'Hey, I have a Chinese writing piece due tomorrow,' Adele starts and Emma is immediately on the same wavelength.

'Of course,' she gushes. 'I almost forgot! Wanna go practice?'

'Only if you're up to it.' Adele adds.

'I am,' she replies confidently, sealing the deal. And then she leans in close to Adele's ear when she thinks no one is looking and whispers: 'are you?'

I'm no detective and certainly not the sharpest cool in the shed, humour and good looks aside of course, but I have a sneaking suspicion something is going on with Adele and it looks as though Emma knows why.

When lunch break ends I walk back to my locker to collect my maths folder and head off to class, a master plan beginning to form in my head.

'Hey,' I say casually when Emma slides into the seat behind the desk in front of me. 'What took you so long?'

'I was at the nurse with Adele,' she says plainly as though that is all the explanation necessary.

'And?'

'And she asked the nurse for a panadol.' She continues flatly.

'So she is okay now?' I pester her for more details.

'Look do you want to take some notes or something?'

'Geeh, I was only asking.'

'That's what they all say.' Emma replies, opening her exercise book to a new page.

'Who say?' I ask confused.

'People like you, of course.'

'Like me?' I still need more clarification.

'Yep.'

'Huh?'

'In case you didn't notice you're a boy Josh, and boys sometimes get these fuzzy feelings in their bellies when they talk to girls.' Emma teases flatly.
