It started out as a normal day for Stephanie. She got to school the same time she always does and met her friends by her locker, like she did everyday. She smiled and said hello to people she knew. Stephanie knew that something was off when her friends, Katy and Jackie, didn't tackle her at full speed. Both girls had an odd look on their faces when she walked up.
"What's up?" Stephanie said as she opened her locker.
"There is a new guy," Jackie whispered.
"He's kind of odd," Katy also whispered.
Stephanie looked at them like they were crazy.
"Why are we whispering?" Stephanie whispered. "And in case you haven't notices, we aren't normal either."
Katy and Jackie looked uneasily at each other and gave a nervous laugh.
"Steph, our-unnormalness- is out of fun. There is something- something strange about him," Jackie had the courage to say.
Stephanie turned and gave both of the girls a sharp look. "Have you talked to him? Ask him how he likes it here? Or have you judged him by the way he looks?"
Neither girl could look their best friend in the eye. They just shuffled their feet and looked at Stephanie's knees.
"You don't even know him, you guys. It's not fair to him, and you are just fueling the gossip train."
Katy glanced up and looked at her for a moment. Her blonde hair was blown around her face and her thinly built body was tense with anger. Her hazel eyes were ablaze with determination.
"I'm going to find him and become friends with him, And if you don't like it, well that's too bad."
Jackie finally looked at Stephanie, with fire building in her eyes."I just feel like there is something different about him and I'm not sure if I like it!"
She stormed off without letting Stephanie say a word. Not like she could say anything if she wanted to. Herself and Katy were frozen in shock. They never seen Jackie get angry about something so small, so trivial.
"Well that was different," Katy finally broke the strange silence.
"Yes. Yes it was."
Not even a minute later, Jackie cam back, looking distraught.
"I'm so sorry, you guys."
Stephanie and Katy looked at each other, then at Jackie. Katy started to giggles, and Stephanie followed suit. Jackie smiled at the two girls and started to laugh with them. They finally settled down and went to their first class.
"So what is so strange about the new guy?" question Stephanie.
"Well, he's-it's just-um...I'm not quite sure," Jackie said.
"He hasn't talked to anyone. He doesn't even look at anybody," Katy explained.
"I did the same thing when I first came here," Stephanie said, giving Katy a pointed look.
"Well I know you did but after 10 minutes, you were talking!" Jackie exclaimed.
"Maybe he's just shy," Stephanie told them. "But I'm still going to speak to him."
Jackie looked toward the homeroom door they were walking to and nodded. Katy looked at Stephanie and nodded.
"Look!" Katy exclaimed, "there he is!"
The trio just walked into their homeroom when they saw him. Stephanie's breath caught in her throat. She couldn't hear or see anyone but him. This boy was all she could focus on.
"Is that him?" she heard herself ask.
