Chapter 8:

10 0 0

Kelsey pulled out of the parking space and onto the road so quickly, that I barely was out the door when she pulled out. "Crap! How do I get home?" suddenly, Kelsey stopped, reversed, and opens the window.

"Sorry, get in!" I jump in her car and we speed off before I can even buckle.

"Slow down!" I scream.

"No! He has my phone and all my money!" She yells speeding up and honking at the cars slowing us down. "Out of my way!" Kelsey screams, swerving like a maniac.

"Kelsey you need to slow down! This is dangerous! We could get hurt or hurt someone else!" I argue reasonably.

"I see him! He turned off onto the next exit!" Kelsey slows down to turn off, then speeds down the down ramp.

"Kelsey, let the police work on this one! This is not our job!" I say, but Kelsey is  unstoppable. Now I realize what y dream was about.

We pass a few more cars and are behind him. He pulls into the far left carpool lane and speeds up. I look in my side mirror and see the police's blaring lights. The man who stole her purse suddenly passes a 'oversize load'  truck by driving on the shoulder which only fits half a car. He must be a professional street racer, because when Kelsey tried to pass, her mirror flies off, through her window flying into my lap. Kelsey stops with a screech and looks at me wide eyed as the cops screech to a halt behind us.

"You did what!" Dad yells at me and Kelsey while her mom stands there next to Kelsey's dad with a hand over her mouth, crying.

"You could have died!" Her mom yells at us with a tears in her eyes as well. "My babies could be 6 feet under right now! You are too young to die! Do you know what that would of done to our families!?! How could you be so stupid?!?" By now, I'm sure that I look like a panda with streaked mascara down my cheeks. Everyone is either yelling at us or crying.

Jake and Chris run in to the police office looking slightly startled to see everyone in such a frazzled mood. "What happened?" Chris says, panting slightly.  Kelsey's dad starts to explain what happened. he was slightly more calm then everyone else, but by the time the boys had heard the whole story, they looked at us with wide eyes. I look at Kelsey and take a deep breath, readying for their confrontations.

"He did what!?! You did what!?!" Chris hollers.

"Frankly, I would have done the same thing." Jake said, coming to sit next to me with a grin. "Except, I wouldn't be caught dead in a coffee shop and don't wear a purse," Jake whispered in my ear. "Oh, and I wouldn't have any money."  I laugh lightly, punching him in the arm. I'm glad Jake is trying to lighten the mood. Otherwise, I'd be way more miserable during these questions by the police. I had a dream just like this, but I'm glad it ended like it did.

"Ladies, have you any idea how fast you were driving?" The police officer asked. He was rather tall and had brown scruffy hair.

"No sir, we were focused on the thief and the other civilians." Kelsey answered politely.

"You were going 85 mile per hour! That was 15 miles over the speed limit and way to fast for a 17 year old to be driving!" The shorter female officer said.

My face reddened. Had he not even listened to what I had already said? Jake tensed beside me, sensing my anger and put a hand on my thigh. "Josline don't-,"

I shook my head. "Officer, we were chasing after the man who-,"

"Stole her purse. We understand, but you shouldn't have chased after him. You girls could have gotten hurt or hurt other civilians. You should have called the police and described the vehicle. Police are tracking him down and will return your purse as soon as possible, Ma'am." The officer says, standing up and shaking mine and Kelsey's hands. "I'll be contacting your parents within the day. You girls stay safe and we'll work on everything else."

We nodded and walked out of the room, Chris and Jake close behind. We drive home in Jake's car, as Kelsey's car had a broken mirror and window. It was pretty much silent other than the radio, quietly playing "Shut Up and Dance".

"I'm sorry girls. I really am," Jake said, "but in all seriousness," We both looked up at Jake who glanced at Kelsey in the mirror, "why couldn't you have asked me if I wanted to come?" We all laughed, making the ride less awkward.

You see? This is why I have such great friends.
