You were six, I was four
We were happy, nothing more
"Remember all the imaginary games we used to play?" I chuckled to myself, " We would pretend to be pirates and rule the seas."
"Yeah," he laughed, a slight wheeze breaking through, "We were... crazy kids back.. then."
A friendship strong we knew where we belonged
Out in the meadow far away
"I still..remember...the meadow..where we met." He commented, his eyes alight with happiness.
"Ah all the memories, good and bad." I replied with a knowing glance. Following that statement was our laughter, his deep laugh and my soft chuckle intertwining.
We had dreams, we had hopes
You were confident in your skin
While I was self conscious in my looks
He pulled out a picture with a mischievous smile plastered on his face. It was a high school photo, the girl smiling brightly at the camera, her red hair cascading in curls down her shoulders, unrestrained. Green eyes held an innocent gaze, freckles lightly dusting her cheekbones. She had a small frame and must have been teased relentlessly for it. I should know, for the young girl was me.
"Oh gosh," I exclaimed, "Look at me in high school." I shook my head with disbelief, not being able to take my eyes off the girl.
"You look beautiful, I always thought you were." He stated it with such confidence, as if it were a common fact. Still smiling, i showed him a picture of my own, a boy who was also smiling. His smile was of utter perfection, making me fall in love with him all over again. As a result of falling onto the pavement in grade school, he had a chip in one tooth making his smile even more unique. Brown eyes stared into the camera, full or arrogance. However behind that thick veil was a world of kindness.
He full out grinned, the smile matching the young boy's.
"Ah those...were the days...getting women.. And partying every night." He winked at me humorously.
"Better be only one girl you're thinking about." I joked around shoving him lightly.
"Can I...use a pass?" His response only got him a smack on the head from yours truly.
People liked you, excelling in sports
I always had my nose in books
"Do..you remember..," he recalled thoughtfully," The..list of..books that..you kept..to yourself?"
"Oh yeah," I said," That was a goal I never got to finish. Maybe because some football star decided to walk into my life."
Smiling, with his hands raised up, he replied," Guilty..as charged."
Time moved on, people changed
I always thought you would stay the same
"The last few years were rough in high school, I still don't know how we ever got past that." I commented, thinking back to the words exchanged between us.
Silence, backs turned, not a single ring
A heated argument that changed everything
The meadow that sat alone, left abandoned
He sighed deeply, wrinkles showing on his forehead. The air in the room was solemn, neither one of us knowing what to say.
"Those years...were the..worst..of my life. I..was so..stupid to.. Ignore you but..." He trailed off, uncertainty in his eyes
