I woke up to my alarm. It was the little robot thing. I smiled and sat up. 6:30, just on time. I got up and walked over to my closet. I picked out some jeans and a t-shirt that said, "Keep Calm and Smile On." I smiled at my reflection in the mirror and grabbed my phone. I walked out into the living room and into the kitchen. I turned on the kettle and grabbed some instant oatmeal. I poured it into a bowl and poured the boiling water over it. I mixed the water and the oats together with my spoon and put the oatmeal in my mouth. Delicious. I checked the time on my phone. 7. Another 45 minutes until I should go. I sat down at the table and finished up my oatmeal and threw it in the dishwasher. Then my phone buzzed. I pulled it out and checked the message.
"I'll pick you up at 7:45?" Brian. I rolled my eyes and smiled. He was such a gentleman. I quickly typed up, "Sounds good. And I'll bet that even if I said no, you would have picked me up anyways." I pressed send and smiled down at my phone. Just then, mom walked into the room.
"Texting Brian?" She asked, noticing my smile.
"Mom!" I complained, "But yes. He's picking me up at 7:45 no matter what."
"No matter what?" She asked, a grin spreading on her face, "That's very protective of him."
"He's way over protective," I smiled, "But I like it." I sat down on the couch with her and smiled. I turned on the tv and we watched that until the doorbell rang. I got up and greeted Brian. "Hi," I smiled.
"Hello," he smiled, kissing my cheek.
"See you later, mom!" I called out. I closed the door behind me and walked grabbed the hand that Brian held out to me. "Let's walk to the car," I smiled.
"Or I could carry you," he grinned.
"No way," I said.
"Too late," he responded. He picked me up and threw me over his shoulder and started walking to the car.
"Brian!" I screeched. I giggled as he got me to his car. He swung open his door and sat in the driver's seat, now lowering me to his lap. "Move me to the passenger's seat," I insisted.
"Only because it's not safe to drive with you on my lap," he smiled, then turned serious, "And you have to stay safe."
"Why are you always so serious when you say that?" I asked. I mean, I wanted to know. I looked up into his eyes and hurt shone in them. "What is it?" I asked again, seeing the concern in his eyes.
"It's just, I never told you, but I had another sister. She died five months ago. She was tortured then killed by a kidnapper. She was the reason we moved here, we wanted to escape the kidnapper. And now I hear about Kayla, and I just can't help but think that it is the same kidnapper. And I want you to stay safe from them."
"Oh," I said. I gave him a kiss on the cheek then continued, "I'm sorry I asked."
"It's fine," he said, "Now you know why I was acting so weird yesterday. Sorry about that."
"It's fine," I smiled. He picked me up and placed me in the passenger's seat, started up the car, and we started to the forest.
