When the realm is in peril,
When the shadows are free,
When the light has turned dark,
When all seems lost,
A hero will rise in the name of justice,
With one life remaining,
He will have a terrible choice to make,
At the end of it all,
But until that day comes,
The justice must be upheld,
Or all will perish.
This is Ianite's Riddle.
Time to respawn.
For the more analytical ones among my very clever readers, you will know or have already seen most of what I am going to say. However there were a lot of small clues especially from the beginning where the riddle was an unknown entity that I know for a fact not everybody got.
So we are going to go through each line in the riddle and I will explain the various references and the true meaning for each line, since there were multiple situations and explanations that applied to the story. What you thought might have applied to one line, what Jordan thought applied to each line isn't always correct. But then again, I'm sure you all already know that :P
When the realm is in peril:
This is pretty self explanatory. The realm has been in peril since the beginning of the story, when Tom found the piles of TNT and redstone in Tucker and Sonja's dead piles. The original aim for them was the blow up the Ianite temple so the riddle could never be revealed, so that nobody would know how to defeat Mianite/The Shadow and so the other members of the prophecy could never come into play. The main peril everyone sees is when Jordan realizes Mianite is the Shadow, which is also correct. Each confrontation and the eventual war itself counts towards the peril, which is only truly resolved when they all jump into the void.
When the shadows are free:
This line is a bit of a controversial one since I have two characters which actively display 'shadow' tendencies. However this line refers to the final battle, in which the shadows have completely taken over Mianite's body, driving his will out of his mind and using the body as a vessel. Mianite is no longer in that body during the battle, a backseat driver as blood is spilled. Shadow's do refer to Caitlin and to her demonic half, (which we did not really meet this time around although you saw glimpses of it, hint hint might meet her next book). The Shadows also refer to Tucker in a way, since he is warped and easily controlled by them as they infected him slowly, its why he fought so poorly in training and was a lot more fierce in his attempts to attack Caitlin during their mini battle. The Shadow's were slowly infecting his brain, taking over his will and causing him to submit to him during the battle.
When the light has turned dark:
This refers both to the environmental changes of the realm and the changes to various characters. On the run up to the battle itself, the month spent actually inside the realm instead of controlling the characters, Tom and Caitlin are the first to notice the clouds slowly rolling over the realm and blocking out all the traces of light - leaving the world in darkness until Mianite and his troops arrive. This literal darkness is an abrupt change from the usual light over world that every Mianitee has grown used to over time, they don't spend much time in the End or in the Nether where there is less light. Mianite and Tucker are the 'light' turning dark, they are as we all know them to be the good guys (in season 1) - representing what is good and kind, fighting for what is right instead of just for the sake of spilling blood. The fact both of them have changed means that something is wrong here.
