Fawks' song filled the room as the silent figures mourned, listening to the bird voicing its grief. At last the opening of the hospital wing's doors broke the silent spell as Arthur and Molly rushed in, Fleur at their heels. The others explained all that had happened, described the battle, Bill's injuries and their lasting effects.
Molly grabbed the ointment out of a shock frozen Madam Pomfrey's hands and dabbed it on to her eldest son's freshly torn skin. The job was rapidly taken over by a slightly destablized Fleur, who was still fircely insisting on marrying her fiancé. Without really thinking about it Tonks leapt at Remus, grabbing his loose robes sobbing that if Fleur could marry Bill, why shouldn't she marry him, she didn't care about his being a werewolf, didn't care what he said, all was unfair... He patted her somwhat awkwardly on the shoulder and began steering her out of the hospital wing, with an arm around her muttering about the Weasleys needing some family time. Through the empty stone halls they stode. The aroused students had obviously been sent back to bed, though it was hard to imagine that anyone could sleep after what had so recently happened.
Tonks was now leaning on Remus' shoulder, weeping as silently as she could, sniffling and tears streaming onto her robes. They headed outside, the evening air sleepy and warm, moon shining brightly as though nothing was out of the ordinary. But of course their lives would now be all the more difficult. Towards the lake they headed, Tonks sniffling weakly, Remus striding purposefully towards the lake. They sat down near the water, leaning on a large oak. Tonks' sniffles subsided steadily as they sat in silence, watching the breeze carve small neat ripples into the lake's black waters.
"I'm too old for you, Tonks" said Remus quietly. In response Tonks sniffled loudly and glowered at the lake. Remus sighed, "I'm too dangerous." Tonks drew a shaky breath, "No you're not", she insisted, sounding like she had caught a bit of a cold. "You know I love you. I'm not giving up. You give up too easily just because you're a --"
"Tonks," Lupin cut in, "You do realise I'm trying to protect you. I endanger anybody who wants to stick with me. Werewolves are cursed. Why would you want to wast the rest of your life on a cursed person? Not to mention old?" The words stung the peaceful night for some drawn out moments.
Ages later Tonks whispered "You don't understand, Remus," she raised her wand, breathing an inaudible incantation. Brilliant white light erupted from it, a whispy creature bounded around them, four-legged, shaggy and wild looking. It faded rapidly. "Sorry," Remus murmured after several long-stretching moments. "You know, you're not too bad either." Remus smiled at her. Tonks' eyes flicked steadily from his slighty paled lips to his eyes of dark chocolaty colour. She leaned in, taken over by emotions beyond her control. Nevertheless, she was pleasantly surprised as Remus met her lips with his halfway in. It felt as though she had the sun on her face for the first time in months. It heated her lips, spread to her cheeks and slowly and gradually through the rest of her body. She must have unconciously caused her hair to turn a vibrant red. When they broke apart, Remus looked at her as though for the first time. Her sunny warmth was replaced by a tingling all over her skin, odd, though not unpleasant. Remus started laughing. His face looked much more relaxed and the years seemes to rewind. He looked as though he was at the least 10 years younger. "You know," he said, "We could try giving this a shot." Tonks smiled from ear to ear "Thank you, Remus" she whispered in his ear.
