The Lessons of Books

I read a book about a girl on fire
I read a book about hobbits, dwarves, elves, wizards and men
I read a book about a fearless girl with a deadly secret
I read a book about a boy with demigod powers
I read a book about a girl whose weakness made her stronger

The girl on fire taught me to hope
The creatures of Middle-Earth taught me to be strong
The fearless girl taught me to be brave
The son of Poseidon taught me to be loyal
The girl with cancer taught me to live for today

They taught me to stand up for what I believe in
To give a damn even when others don't
They taught me to pursue my dreams
To never give up
But the most important lesson they've taught

They taught me how to love against all hope
That even the smallest person can change the world
That it's not bad to be different
That family is everything
And that not everything is as bad as it seems
