AILAINA
"You're already planning your project?" I'm current laying stomach-down on my bed, finishing up the last bit of the pre-cal homework Mr. Brown assigned while talking to Calum on the phone. "But you don't even know who your partner is yet." It's Sunday evening and this weekend has gone by so slowly. Normally I wouldn't complain, but tomorrow my art class is taking an all-day field trip to the newly built museum in town and I couldn't be any more excited. I haven't gone on field trips since grade school and the thought of visiting a museum just seemed to spark my interest. There's something about sculptures and paintings that just seem to relax me.
"Well I like to plan ahead of time. You know, just to take sure everything won't flop last minute," Calum says through speaker phone. "I want to make sure that no matter who I end up with, our project will be a good one."
I hear my mom coming up the stairs, each step making a slight creak. "Is that Calum I hear?" she asks, using the basket filled with laundry in her arms to push the door open.
"Hi Sandra!" Calum shouts through my phone. My mom has known Calum for so long, she now let's him call her by her first name. Sometimes he comes over just so they can hang out. Others might find it weird, but I find it kind of cute. I like a guy who can get along with my family, especially my mom.
"Hi Cal!" my mom greets back then enters my room. She puts the basket down on my bed and picks out the clothes that are mine and places them down neatly.
I close my textbook shut and roll onto my back to face the ceiling. "Well what if your partner doesn't like your idea or has an idea of their own?"
"Eh, I'm willing to negotiate."
"Yeah, you always find your way. And besides, I'm sure what ever you come up with will be good. I mean, you are Calum Hood after all."
He laughs. "As long as I'm not with Luke, then I'm all good. That's the last thing I want."
"Luke? Isn't he that boy who is always up to no good?" my mom asks, butting into our conversation.
"Yeah him," says Calum.
My mom places her hands on her hips and gives me a stern look. "I don't like that boy. He's very naughty. I don't want you to have anything to do with him, you hear me Ailaina?"
I sit up, crossing my legs before me and rest my elbows on my knees. "Me?! I don't even talk to him, let alone like him!" I protest.
"Good. And that goes for you too, Calum. I don't want you two hanging out with any bad influences."
Calum laughs, "You got it, Sandra."
"And I mean what I say, Laina," she continues, now wagging her finger at me. "I know girls your age are into those bad boy types, and I do not approve of him."
"Are you serious, mom?"
She picks up the basket and heads towards the door. "Date Calum instead. Now he's a guy I approve."
"We're only friends!" I shout back nervously through the walls.
Calum let's out an uneasy laugh, "Ha-ha, yeah... Just friends."
"Well it's starting to get late. I'm gonna head to bed. Talk to you tomorrow?" I say.
"Yeah, for sure. Meet up for lunch? I'll update you on my partner."
"Can't. I have my field trip, remember?"
"Oh right, right. I forgot."
"Just text me after school, yeah?"
"Alright. Talk to you then."
