Olivia and I had picked up enough supplies to last about a week in the desert. We drove as far as we thought necessary and started walking. As we were walking we found a car that looked to be abandoned.
"It could've been another human." Olivia says excitedly. But I had other thoughts. "Or it could have been Wanderer." I said remembering my old friend from the origin. Olivia looked at me puzzled. I sighed.
"There was a soul who was... Different. She had been to 8 planets before earth. She had a resistant host that hadn't faded away. She had decided to receive a different host because the rebel one was becoming too much to handle. She chose to drive instead of take the shuttle and ended up driving into the desert. This one to be precise. The seekers looked but never found anything. They gave up and said that she was dead. That she had been ripped apart by coyotes. But now I don't believe them." I explain. I had a wild suspicion that Wanderer was out here hiding with the humans. And maybe Olivia wouldn't lose her sisters body.
Wanda's POV:
We were headed on a medicine raid after Doc had used the last of the heal on a gash running all the way up Jamie's forearm. Long story short Mel and I aren't letting him near knives again. In the van was our small team of Mel, Jarod, Ian, and I. Ian was driving while I rode shotgun. I was the first to spot the two girls, who looked to be 16, trekking through the desert. Ian and I looked at each other and he stopped the van. "Hey what's going on?" Mel asked popping her head out From the back seat. "Two girls there. They could be souls. Wanda and I will check 'em out." Ian said pulling out a pair of sunglasses and placing them over his eyes.
We opened the doors and hopped out. Ian beat me out and talked to the girls first. "Hello there ladies. What brings you out to the desert?" He asks being as much like a soul as possible. The two had very straight brown hair, green eyes, the same physique, and the same facial structure. Other than that they were noticeably different. One had shoulder length hair and bronze skin, while the other had waist length hair and ivory skin. They must be twins.
The tanned one was the one to step forward. "Well we are just camping." The tan girl said. Something was amiss. By now I was standing beside Ian staring at these two girls. The pale one looked anxious. "Thank you for stopping to check on us. It means a lot. We're just... Out for a hike. Have a good day." She said. Even I could tell she was lying. But why would she lie?
The tanned one was looking at Ian like she was hiding something. He cocked his head to the side questioningly. The sun got in the tan girls eyes and she looked at the ground. I gasped. There was no silver reflection.
"You're human." Ian says skeptically. The tan one dropped to a squat and kicked his legs out from under him. The pale sister shied away from the scene. The tan one pinned Ian to the ground and turned her head back to the call out to her companion. "Ash, run! Find the others! GO!" Wait, they were looking for us? The other girl stayed put. I looked at her and saw fear in her eyes.
I recovered from my shock and spoke as calmly as I could. "If you're looking for the other humans, you've found a small fraction of them." I say holding my hand out and inching closer to the girls. The tan one looked down at Ian and pulled out a flashlight and checked Ian's eyes. Sure enough there was no reflection.
She gasped and turned to the other girl, who was bowing her head. The tan one looked back with fearful eyes. "Don't hurt her!" She said rather forcefully as she got off of Ian and stood in front of the pale one. "Why would we hurt her?" I ask cautiously. The tan one looked at my face questioningly and sighed. "You have to promise not to freak out. My sister here is not entirely human." She says with skepticism on her face.
I look to the other one who was biting her lip. Then it clicked. "She's a soul." I say in disbelief. The pale one cringes while the tan one looks like she's preparing for a fight. I look at Ian and grin. The girls catch it and tilt their heads curiouly. "We wouldn't dare hurt you. As long as you don't hurt any of us. Including Wanda." Ian says grinning back at me. The pale one, the soul, steps forward. "Wanda? By that do you mean-", she looks at me with wide eyes and stares at me. The sun had caught in my eyes and were showing the silver that signalled a soul was there.
The soul smiled at me and took a step closer. "It's good to see you again, Angel." She said. I gaped at what she had called me. It was my nickname on the origin. And only one person knew it. The soul must be- "Ash!" I say hugging her. She hugs back.Ian and the other girl were dumbstruck as Ash and I caught up. "Leave it to you to find a hoard of resistant humans. It's a good thing you didn't work for the seekers." Ash says, grinning at me. I smiled back. I had just found my oldest friend.
