Chapter 1
The sound of rage filled the air around me. The streets were relatively empty, with few lights clearing the darkness of the night. Yet like two poor tempered men, somehow these two cars managed to find each other. And so began a mindless onslaught of car horns and red faced drivers, mouthing the filthiest things that came to mind.
I watched as one driver sped off in fit of rage, reaching a dangerous speed. He came to a turn without decreasing his speed, whipping around the corner and out of sight. The other driver wasn't far behind the first when it came to speed and I watched as he too disappeared from my line of sight. How could people be so reckless on an icy road? I shook my head in disapproval at the passing cars, and whispered to myself, "Don't slip."
With all the ruckus gone I became very aware that my little sister, Lucy, had a death grip on my arm, she had herself wrapped so tight around me I doubt a crowbar could free me from her grasp. I gave her a warm smile and patted her head as if to say everything is okay and with that we were ready to continue walking.
The wind was starting to pick up now, blowing our hair in our faces and making small pieces of trash take flight. The million mile per hour winds sure had me wishing for anything warm, like the sun.
But the sun had long since sunk beneath the hills; leaving us to be slowly enveloped by the ever darkening sky. The approaching storm reminded me of a home I knew once upon a time; refusing to let the stars shine, locking them up, and nearly suffocating them in a blanket of clouds.
We followed the street lamps as they parted the darkness with striking golden rays. The lights presented us an odd sense of safety as we continued down the seemingly endless path home.It was so cold out, at this point that we might as well have been walking in a freezer.
I had to get us home fast. I didn't feel like having frozen toes among other unpleasantries of the cold. We walked in silence, our scarves covering up everything below our eyes. Winter was nice, we could hide ourselves without looking suspicious. The sound of rustling paper drew our attention, ending the timeless silence. Lucy loosened her death grip on my arm enough to pick up the news paper."Look!" Lucy cried pointing to the front page.
The paper had been surprisingly legible, with little water damage from the rain.Lucy pointed out a picture of two young girls presumed to be runaways. The older one was short for her age. She was seventeen, with brilliant blue eyes and long black hair that hung below her knees.
The other looked surprisingly different for the two being sisters. She was five years old, with freckles and big honey colored eyes. The picture showed both, the freckle-faced redhead and the wide-eyed brunette smiling, but it didn't show how unhappy we were.
Mom and dad had always been drunks; violent drunks at that, but I had always managed to protect Lucy from their violent outbursts. One time, however, I couldn't quite make the cut. I pushed the image of a scarred and battered Lucy out of my mind, before taking the paper from my sister and tossing it into a puddle. Lucy returned to gripping my arm tightly as we finished our walk in silence.
