"We are now approaching Humanity Island."
Abby glanced up at the guide standing at the front of the ship and the island beyond her. She wondered for the hundredth time why it had been given such an arrogant name. How far would humans go to be the best? She still wasn't even sure why she was here. She knew next to nothing about this island. When she first heard about it, a few weeks back, she felt an incredibly strong desire to go, and that was all she knew.
Abby was a 14 year old girl with no talents to speak of. She came from a small town in the middle of nowhere, and she spent most of her time reading. She always figured anything else was a waste of time. She liked to escape to other worlds where she could be whatever she wanted to be. Perhaps that was why she had decided to leave everything and move to this island.
She had wavy blonde hair and stormy grey eyes. She was dressed in a hoodie, jeans, and converse shoes, and she had a backpack with all of her necessities. She put the book she had been reading back in her bag, so she could listen properly to the tour guide.
"I'm sure many of you already know this," the guide continued, "but I am required to go over the history of the island before we arrive, so please bear with me. Now, it was some 50 years ago when a lone ship stumbled upon this uncharted island. When its crew came ashore they quickly discovered that the island was without wildlife. There wasn't a single creature in sight, and it was eerily quiet. The sailors decided that, since they were the only ones there, the island would be named HumanityIsland.
"Naturally, scientists from all over came to investigate this island and its strange atmosphere. For a long while they discovered nothing of any interest. Then, after a few scientists brought their families with them, they made their first discovery. Whenever children came to the island, they began to develop unique abilities."
Abilities? Abby thought. What kind of abilities are we talking here?
"These abilities gained world-wide fame, and soon after, construction of a new city began. 10 years ago Humanity city was opened to the public, and that is where you are now headed."
Abby couldn't help but feel disappointed. It was nice and all but the guide hadn't really said what Abby needed to know.
"I can see there are a lot of young people here today, but that comes as no surprise. A majority of the population are students who came with their heads filled with dreams of being a super hero. Or maybe not. Maybe you're a researcher, offering your knowledge to discover this island's secrets. Whoever you are, you are not alone. We get people from all walks of life. I'm sure, whatever it is you seek, you'll find it in HumanityCity."
Abby was getting really frustrated. Whenever she told someone she was moving to HumanityCity, they always got super excited and neglected to say anything. Her mom found this funny and decided to keep the secret going. Now it even felt like the tour lady was in on it.
"This is it everyone," the tour lady said as the ship entered the docks and came to a stop. "If you'll please follow me." She led everyone off the ship, and as Abby stepped on to the dock, the wind picked up. Abby held her hair out of her face and looked up at the towering skyscrapers in front of her.
HumanityIsland was technically two islands, but they were so close together that it was like a river separated them. It was salt-water, but everyone referred to it as a river. A majority of the city was on the southern half of the island; that was where all the schools were, and where the students lived. The northern half island was the industrial part of the city. The scientists did their research there, and there were a lot of laboratories. There were 4 bridges across the river that connected the two islands.
