The Baby

Preparations

It was mid October in LA, meaning Phoebe only had two more months remaining in her pregnancy. They found out almost six weeks ago that they were having a baby girl! Everything was so exciting for Ruby and her; they spent most days reading the baby books, making plans for the nursery and deciding possible names for the baby. Today, however, was different. Today, they were going to purchase their first outfit for the baby: one that they would take her home in.

"Are you almost ready, babe?" Ruby asked Phoebe as she walked into their bathroom, lighting up when seeing her face. Pregnancy gave Phoebe such a glow that Ruby couldn't get enough of. Walking up behind her, Ruby wrapped her arms around Phoebe's waist and placed her hands on Phoebe's belly. She lifted her linen shirt above her bump to get better access to the baby. Rubbing her hands around Phoebe's stomach, Ruby was rewarded with several strong kicks from the baby. They looked at each other through the mirror, smiling ear to ear. Ruby leaned down bringing her lips to Phoebe's neck and tenderly kissing it with adoration. "We should get going soon," Ruby mumbled against her neck.

Phoebe turned around in Ruby's arms, pressing her lips against Ruby's. "Can we just stay like this all day? The baby likes your touch, Mum." Ruby gave her another kiss, smiling into it at the thought of soon becoming a mom with Phoebe.

"Sorry, Mommy. We've got to go get the little munchkin some clothes to take her home in, though you know I would love to stay in bed all day, doing this..." she trailed off, returning her lips to Phoebe's. Their lips interlocked for a while longer, Ruby's hands exploring Phoebe's soft skin and hair. Snapping out of it, they both realized that they truly needed to get on with their day. With a few final touches to their hair and makeup, they left their house, excited about what this day had in store.

After the twenty minute car ride, Ruby and Phoebe arrived at their favorite baby boutique, one that they had loved even before they knew that they were going to have a baby.  Ruby parked the car and jumped out quickly to help Phoebe out of the passenger side. For the past few weeks, Ruby had become very protective of Phoebe and the baby, not letting her doing much of anything on her own. Taking showers, getting dressed and putting on shoes had become a two person job since Ruby took it upon herself to help her very pregnant wife.

They walked into the store hand in hand, greeted my an overly enthusiastic clerk standing at the front. Luckily she seemed pretty clueless and hadn't recognized the celebrity couple. This day was for the baby, not wanting it to be ruined by some jerk paparazzi waiting to get his next big story.

They perused the shelves of Eco-friendly clothes: onesies, diaper covers, hats, socks, dresses. After about an hour of shopping, they settled with four onesie sets with matching socks, a few beanies and a little shirt that read "mommy + mommy = me" which they found adorable. Their favorite onesie, a pink seersucker one with an elephant on the front, was chosen to bring her home in.

They paid for the clothes and walked to their car. While helping her in, Ruby stopped Phoebe and gently pressed her back against the car door. "I love you, Pheebs, and this little one too," she said patting Phoebe's belly. It was almost like she couldn't form words when thinking how much she loved her family. Giving up trying to find the right thing to say, Ruby sighed in content and added, "My girls."

Phoebe smiled wide looking deep into Ruby's eyes. "How did I get so lucky?" Ruby caught Phoebe's lips in passionate kiss. Moaning at her touch, Phoebe kissed back, neither seeming to care that they were in a parking lot. Finally, the grumbling of Phoebe's stomach halted their moment, reminding them that there was a baby waiting to be fed. With that, Ruby helped her in the car, giving her a quick kiss, and headed out for lunch.
