Chapter 2:

I sliped back into my room and made a beeline towards the window seat. As I sat with my back against the cold stonewall I tried to clear my mind but his eyes danced behind my eyelids. Those golden irises seemed to mock me and my weakness for him.

My door creaked open and my eyes snapped open, an irrational part of me longed for him step out from behind it, however inappropriate that would have been. However my irrational side was squished when my thirteen-year-old brother walked in.

“Hello Tavian”, I greeted him letting my dislike for him ooze around the words.

“Ah, my dearest sister, I saw you in the throne room just now. You appear to be quite taken with the Amontan prince. I was just considering how good you two would look together.” He stated with a smile.

I grimaced and forced a smile onto my face. Of course he liked him it was no surprise considering he liked all the crown princes that came to court me. He wanted me married off, ruling another kingdom far away from him and “his” title as soon as possible. Personally I to favored this plan over the other options he had presented. If my husband was a second son we would not have lived a fortnight past our wedding.

“Leave”, I commanded him. When he doesn’t I stood up and lunged toward him and screamed, “Leave now”. This sent him scampering. I slumped against the wall and sank to the floor, desperately trying to calm down. My emotions formed a haze-like blur around me and each breath was like a breeze pushing more and more of it away.

When only the faintest trace of the fog was left my door inched open and my head snapped up ready to attack Tavian again but instead of him my mother stepped inside.

“Valancy, darling, it’s almost time for diner and you look atrocious.” She scolded. I looked at her with a dazed expression.

She draged me to my feet, sat me on my stool and scurried towards my chest. She propped it open and began to rifle her way through the satins and silks until she reached the bottom. “Aha”, she smiled triumphantly as she produced a milky green silk dress with golden embroidery and an ivory under skirt.

After making my corset tighter and yanking the outfit over my head she plaited my wild curls and fastened the delicate gold chain with my grandmothers locket on it around my neck.

“Come now everyone is waiting” she nudged me forward and as we glided past the mirror I glanced in and saw an ivory angel staring back at me.
