I've never really liked to eat candy hearts. For me, they were too hard, not that delicious, and bad for our teeth. The only candy I ever really really liked was Smarties, though I rarely eat sweets.
My aunt was a dentist so I grew up paying extra attention to my chompers. I even bring a toothbrush to school. I avoid food with lots of sugar as much as possible. I don't want to get cavities like those people in pictures. I wanted my teeth to be as healthy as they could be. For fourteen years, candy was a big no-no for me.
Until one day changed that.
It was a hot Friday afternoon. I was standing under the shade of a big tree outside my school, shifting from one foot to another. I was waiting for my cousin Astrid, whom I call Riri to pick me up in their van, because we were supposed to go together to her sister's tenth birthday party.
I checked my phone for the time. She was already ten minutes late. I was probably the only student left here. My best friend Gwen had already went home, saying she had a doctor's appointment after school.
"My dearest Riri," I said under my breath,"I am personally going to kill you if you don't show up."
I sit down on the ground and remove the backpack from my shoulder. Oh, how I wish I had brought a book along with me. Time would pass by quickly if I had something to read. But I had nothing with me, so I would probably just have to make do with sitting/pacing/tugging up grass/ singing some song/playing some sort of game with myself while I wait.
I sigh and look around me. A poster about the upcoming school dance was already put up on the gates. I shake my head. Another thing I've never really liked. Dancing.
I decide to count the minutes that would pass on my phone before Astrid got to where I was so that I could accuse her of making me wait for blah blah minutes, etcetera, etcetera.
A minute passed.
One minute and thirty seconds.
Two minutes.
Two minutes and thirty seconds.
Three minutes.
Three minutes and-
"Kylie? Kylie Choi?" A male voice came from behind me.
My head jerked up. It couldn't have been Riri, because the voice was masculine. A kidnapper? No. Not that kind of masculine. Teenager boy masculine. And the voice was familiar. Too familiar. Could it be-? No. Don't get your hopes up, Kylie. Maybe some random classmate of mine. Yeah, that's it. I turn my head to see...
Wait. Are my eyes deceiving me?
William Stone aka. Liam the boy of my wildest dreams was standing behind me.
OHMYGOODNESSWHATISHEDOINGHERE??? Why is he here??? I knew it was his voice! Ugh, he looks so darn handsome. WAIT. Stop this abnormality, Kylie. He's just a boy. But do I look okay? Dude, I probably look like some turtle with a heatstroke right now! I forced a smile on my face. AAHHHHH DON'T BE CREEPY DON'T BE CREEPY.
"Oh, yeah- um, uh, L-Liam," I stutter, wiping my sweaty palms on my jeans. "Hi. Didn't think I would see you here."
He smiles. Oh brave Godric Gryffindor, that smile. Ugh, he's just too perfect. NO! Stop this. STOP. THIS. KYLIE. He walked to where I was and sat beside me. Keep calm, keep calm.
"You do know that my uncle teaches in the college department, right?" I nod, everybody knew that. "Well, we go home together. He's just staying a little later today."
