Part 1

It's the first day of kindergarten. My mother hands me a piece of golden toast with butter on it. Our family eats better than the others of District 12 because of our bakery. Some of the kids I've seen stare into our windows are so hungry you can see their ribs.

I finish my toast while walking on the way to the school building. And then I saw her.

A dark haired girl my age, two braids down her back, carrying a small lunch pale, and wearing a red plaid dress. She was beautiful.

I suddenly came to a stop just to watch this girl walk to school a few yards ahead of me on the other side of the path. She never turned my way. Eventually I started walking again. I hoped she would be in my class.

"Mrs. Rivers? Where do I sit?" I asked when I walked into my classroom I was assigned to just a few moments ago as soon as I walked in.

"Peeta? You sit..." She looked down at her clipboard that apparently had a seating arrangement on it.

"Oh yes! Peeta! You sit on the 3rd table to the left with Jaymes!"

Jaymes and I have never spoken but I've seen him with his dad in our bakery. When I sit down he doesn't say a word.

The girl walks in. I stare. I'm in love already. Her voice is plain when she asks where she sits. The teacher points to the table in front of me.

In front of me!

She sits down and shortly the class begins.

"Hello students. I'm Mrs. Rivers. The first thing I would like to do is have the class sing a few songs. Now, does anyone know the Valley song?"

Katniss's hand shot right up.

"Oh good! Would you like to sing for us?"
