"Emie, eat your breakfast, if you don't, Aunt Hannie will be very, very sad." I told the little toddler sitting in front of me. I gave her a fake pout which made her eyes go wide.
"No, I don't want Hannie to be sad.." She said worriedly before quickly finishing up her cereal.
"Very good, now go pick out some clean clothes for today, Auntie Ana is waiting for you!" I enthused as I wiped the little girls hand with a wipe. She cheered before running off into her bedroom with her penguin in hand. Man she loves that ratty old thing. She's never away from it long enough for me to grab it and throw it in the washer. Lord only knows where that things been. But I cant complain. Her daddy gave that to her for her first birthday. It's the only thing she has left of him..
Emie is technically my niece. Emie is a nickname, short for Emaline. It's the only thing her mom ever contributed for her. Her mom left her with her dad, my brother, right after she was born. He was no where ready to be a father, He had to learn the ropes of infanthood all by himself. Our parents passed in a car accident a couple years ago. They weren't around to help my brother. They didn't even know he got a girl pregnant.
"Hannie." I was broke out of my memories by Emie pulling on the hem of my shirt, its the only thing she could reach.
"Yes baby?" I picked her up and set her on the counter by the sink, where I was doing the breakfast dishes.
"Can you stay with me and Auntie Ana?" she asked me in the cutest little voice ever. This question made my heart melt.
"I cant sweetie, I have to work to feed you're big tummy!" I said giggling poking her in the stomach which made her giggle also.
"And I think Auntie Ana has something special planned for you today." Her eyes went big along with her growing smile as she clapped her hands together excitedly.
"Yayyy, Lets go Hannie!" She said jumping into my arms. Luckily I had changed into my work uniform before I got her up this morning. I grabbed my car keys, my purse, Emie's diaper bag, and headed for the front door with her in my arms.
I take care of Emie now. My brother Joshua was involved with the wrong people, he was selling drugs to get the money to care for Emie. He got behind on some deal, which cost him his life. Before he died, he granted me godmother of Emie, which means I have full custody of her. I was no where near ready to raise a child. I was fresh out of high school when my brother was murdered.
It's June 19, and exactly a month ago, I graduated. The same day, my brother was shot to death on his way back home from my graduation. I know its not my fault for his death. But I feel there's something I could have done to keep my brother from dying.
Before I realize it, Emie and I have arrived at my best friend Analeigh's house. She takes care of Emie when I'm at work. Which feels like all the time.
"EMIEEEEE, look what I've got!" The blonde cooed as soon as she opened her front door.
The little girl jumped from my arms into Analeigh's in a nano second. Ana had gotten her a new stuffed penguin, much bigger, and cleaner, than the one Emie has.
"Hey Hannah, Nice uniform." I stuck my tongue out at her cause she was teasing me. She sent me a flirty wink.
"I gotta go. I'm gonna be late for my double." I said as I gave Emie a quick peck on the cheek.
"Bye Emie, see you later, love you!" I soothed her, she seemed as if she was about to cry. Analeigh does tell me she cry's when I leave. I don't blame her. Everyone she's known has left her. I am definitely not about to do that to this poor girl. She's mine now. And I will not let anything hurt her.
"Love you to Hannie." She replied between sobs. I had to hold back my tears.
"Bye Hannah, what time do you get off?" Analeigh asked me.
"Not until tonight. I'm working two shifts. I need the money." I said apologetically. She nodded while waving one last goodbye. I heard her tell Emie they were gonna get some ice cream after she shut the door.
Analeigh is a saint I swear. She's my age, 18. And she looks like she could be a supermodel. She's got long waist length blonde hair and big blue eyes. She's got a rocking body that stops guys in their tracks. They practically break their neck looking at her. Her and I are exact opposites. While she's blonde with blue eyes, I'm brunette with hazel eyes. She's tall and skinny, I'm short and average. She wears heels and dresses while I wear leggings and t shirts with boots. Even though we're different, I love her to death. I owe her everything I have for taking care of Emie as often as she does. She's offered me money to help with bills and everything, but I refuse, she's done so much for me already and I don't want her money.
