Phil stopped by often, and everytime they were together they were off into a different world. They collided into each other running up and down the streets of Dan's neighborhood, they hid like molerats when they found new secret places and paths. They created a universe with only them, and they defeated monsters and discovered treasure in caves, and they soared with freedom and creativity.

.

Dan was six now and Phil had become his absolute best friend, for they did almost everything together. They ate together, they went on errands with Dan's mom together, they decorated Mr. Piper's pavement purely with chalk all the way up to his doorstep together, then sprinted for Old Miss McGuiney's neatly trimmed bushes when he caught on. Phil pretty much stays at his house, although the first time he asked his mom if Phil could sleep over she looked very confused. But she eventually nodded and with a sly smile pulled up a chair for his friend so he could join them for supper.

"I wish you would come to school with me, then I could prove to all my friends that I really do have a big kid for a friend"

"You know I can't do that," Phil sighed weakly. Dan drooped his shoulders and quirked his mouth sideways. "It's just... I can't miss school, I'm older so I have to go to every class."

"You're only ten. You don't have to go to EVERY class!" Dan started to sound whiny, so Phil suggested they go to sleep. They curled up in the blankets (for some reason Dan's mom was too lazy to get the blow-up mattress for Phil) and they talked for the rest of the night until their throats were sore and brains overrun.

.

It was Dan's 7th Birthday so his parents made sure he invited a group of friends that he played with at school. He ended up inviting 6 of his friends from his first grade class.
Dan and his mom were making cards to hand out to his friends, when she looked over she sighed and pursed her lips. "Who's the extra card there for, sweetie?"
"Phil of course!" Dan looked up with his brow furrowed. "Mom! He only comes around every day, of course he would be invited!"
"I'm not sure, if he should come," then seeing the distress on her boy's face, tried to correct her phrasing, "He probably won't have much fun with your other friends. He is much older then them."
"But mom... I've told all my friends all about him, and they think I'm lying about having a big kid for a friend, MOM PLEASE!"
She made a long monotonous hum, quieting him down. Finally, exasperated, she said, "I'll talk to your father about it okay?"
