Jack is a robot built by Melissa's father. He was created to protect Melissa from bullies. He is also programmed with a personality of his own and a disguise for when he is out and about. He is a very sweet and kind robot/boy but is quite tough when it comes to protecting Melissa. If you can't tell from his design, he is supposed to be a wolf (since this story is full of anthros) and so is his design.
