Two fired gunshots echoed through a small home in downtown New York city. The scent of gun powder could be easily smelled.
Young, African-American female twins immediately awoken from their pleasant dreams and rushed to their parent's bedroom.
The older and slightly taller one in medium long, braided pigtails busted the door open to have the both of them see their mother sprawled on her back on her bed.
Both of her legs were outstretched and both of her eyes were wide open like she was in shock. Some of her dark brown hair covered her face. Her head was turned to the left. Blood trickled down the right side of her slightly gaped lips. More blood seeped through her lavender night gown from the wound to her chest. Their father was standing a mere few feet away from the corpse holding the gun in both of his trembling hands and aiming for his wife's chest. His eyes went wide as he stared at the scene in horror.
The twin girls both dropped to their knees in unison, tears filling their sugar brown eyes and rolling down their cheeks.
"mother....", cried the younger one with one braided ponytail.
The older one stared up at her father angrily, not being able to stop the tears from falling, until she deeply gazed into his eyes.
"I didn't do it....", mumbled the father.
"It wasn't me...", he mumbled again; his voice was ragged and shaky.
The older twin didn't see hatred or fury in his eyes. His eyes showed dread, remorse, and guilt. She truly believed he wasn't the culprit. If he wasn't then who was?
Minutes later, the sound of sirens rang in the nightly air, alarming the neighbors; awakening them from their slumber, having them hastily run outside to see the commotion. The father was arrested, though there were no witnesses who saw him do the crime and no concrete evidence that point to him being the culprit; he had to serve ten to twenty years in prison.
The younger twin was sent to the mental hospital and the older twin was sent to live her closest relative, her grandmother and never seeing her sister or father again. The house was left untouched after the tragic incident and the case ended up closed, years later.
The younger twin, Jasmine, have forgotten what happened that horrible night, after being released from the hospital. The older twin, Brittnee, could never have forgotten; her mother brutally murdered and her father put away in jail for a crime he didn't commit, under false charges.
