Chapter 1

She was here, it was finally happening! Mary took a deep breath, closing her eyes and running her fingers through her long black hair that grazed her lower back. She was soaring through the air in a personalized alpha-pod customized just for her. It was the perfect size, and complete with her favorite snacks, music, colors, and scented glade candles. She opened her eyes and looked in the mirror in front of her. Mascara was perfect, eyeshadow: bold and very gold, and black bottom liner, with a hint of plum eyeliner on her inner corners to bring out her green eyes. Everything was perfect. She turned her head, and for the first time throughout her entire flight, she saw other tiny alpha-pods zooming through the air, and before she knew it, her alpha-pod had soundlessly landed on the gold brick, and miraculously, her suitcases were already resting right beside her when she stepped outside the bubble-shaped flying machine. She looked at the pink sheet of paper that explained her instructions once on the island, and it read "Please walk to the Alpha Hall with all belongings. Follow the Gold Brick Road until you reach the Alpha Hall."

Mary shrugged, pick up her suitcases, and began to walk down the gold brick road towards the Alpha Hall. A rush of adrenaline seemed to be shooting up and down her body. Shira Brazille had said there was a surprise waiting for them when all 100 girls were seated in the Alpha Hall, and the knowledge of knowing there was a surprise both terrified and excited Mary. What could Shira have up her sleeve? Would there be a party? Would there be multiple alphas at the end of the year? Would she be sending people home before giving anyone a chance to show there talents? These thoughts seemed to keep Mary in a daydream for quite some time, because it was not until she practically walked into the Alpha Hall door that she realized she'd arrived at her destination. She quickly backed away, straightened her outfit and adjusted her Coach high tops before taking a deep breath, and opening the gold door that would lead to the Alpha Hall. It was quite a site to see in the AH (Alpha Hall). Girls from ages 14-16 were scattered all throughout the room. Most were standing alone, awkwardly shifting from side to side, while a few girls chatted together in clusters. Mary scanned the room, hoping she would see a familiar face, but clearly, that wasn't happening. She was from a small town in California; population: 15,045; like anybody she knew would be here. She shook off her nervous energy, and with her head held high, walked to a nearly vacated table and sat down. Now, it seemed, all she had to do, was wait.
