Remus being a werewolf made it seem like he had a period. Once a month he would buy immense amounts of chocolate, he would be tired, have mood swings and in pain the day after his transition.
In seventh year Lily's period actually synced with his, so James had two grumpy people to take care about at the same time.
Lily made Remus feel less ashamed. It was OK to not be yourself once a month.
Remus and Lily tried to break the period taboo at Hogwarts, similar to Hermione with S.P.E.W. , but they didn't have much luck.
