Dragging my feet along the ground, kicking stones as I went, I finally reached my street. Turning down the road, I seen my neighbors walking along the other side of the road with their new baby girl.
The Ramsdans where nice people who always gave me money in a card for my birthday. Maybe that's why I liked them. I shouted hello and kept walking, not really in the mood to make silly faces at a baby and have small talk about my mothers homemade casserole.

Today had been a difficult day. Luke hasn't stopped having a go at me the whole seven hours at school. He's kept up his act in front of Mr Walking that we were dating, holding me so tight I couldn't breathe and crushing my hand in his large ones. I was used to his usual comments about my appearance; ugly, fat ass, jiggly, but he wouldn't drop the thing about my newly dyed hair or the silver ring in my nose. You think your popular now? You think because you've changed your hair that everyone will want to shag you? The answer was no.

No I didn't think this, I knew none of that would happen. I knew just because I'd changed my appearance people wouldn't just stop the horrible way they treated instantly. But I knew I could look myself in the mirror and feel confident and not dislike myself as much. The unhealthy obesity that was me two months ago had gone and was replaced by a healthy girl with curves and a decent bum. I was one of those girls that couldn't  just eat without getting 'fat', I couldn't leave exercise out of my life style and still be fit. The way I was heading I was digging myself into an early grave with the amount of high saturated, sugary foods I was putting in my body. The toxins would catch up with me eventually.

I arrived home to find no one there and I was secretly glad. Gave me a chance to have a bit of a cry. That's the thing about Luke, he knows how to get right under my skin and hit where it hurts most. During geography class he'd began slapping the edge of the ruler up my arm so that I ended up with big red lines up and down my arms. I'd tried to move away but he'd held my hand down and I didn't want to make a scene.
My escape was at lunch break, where I could sit outside in the secret garden area that no one ever went in and read my book or scroll through social media in peace whilst eating last nights leftovers. But I had to go back to class eventually and hell would start again.

Once I'd wiped away the last of my tears, I wondered upstairs and changed into my running pants, deciding to go a jog along the beach. I'd done a lot of running this summer, building up my cardio and pacing myself so that hopefully I could run in our towns annual marathon when it came back around next year.
The way my bedroom was built, I was able to hop over the balcony from my room and land easily on the beach. Plugging in my earphones, I turned up the music until the only thing I could hear was the beat of some Avicii song and began pacing myself.

As I reached the other end of the beach I slowed myself down and went over to sit and rest on a boulder half buried in the sand.
The beach was peaceful around this time on night, the odd person walking their dog or a couple eating ice cream, kissing in between. My phone rang in my hand and I picked it up to my mother.

"Hello." I answered, bouncing my feet off the rock is was sitting on.

"Mila where are you? It's almost time for dinner." She asked me, I could hear my brother shout something in the background.

"Sorry, I'm along the beach. Be home in ten." I said before hanging up. Standing up, I brushed some sans that was on my legs and pushed my earphones back into my ears and let the music play. I told my mother ten minutes so I'd have to sprint back along this beach to make it ten minutes. Quickly, I took off into a fast sprint across the beach. The tide was coming in and so the sand was wet, making it hard and easier to run on.

I was doing good until someone shouted, giving me a fright and cracking my concentration. Pulling out a earphone, I turned to look up to where none other than the man himself was sitting sipping a beer and loving life.

"Hey fat ass, didn't know you could run?" He laughed and the other around him joined in. I recognized Ashton, Calum, Michael and a few others from school but the rest where a mystery.

In usual summer style, they'd set up a circle of chairs, grabbed a few beers from their parents cupboards and sat around a  small, homemade fire.Luke was sitting in the middle, directly facing down the water and down to me.

"You going back into the ocean, you whale?" They all burst out laughing. I just stared at him, glassy eyed. "Hah, bitch."

"Fuck you, Luke Hemmings." I say, out loud, in front of all his friends. His cocky smile was instantly wiped off his face and replaced with a pissed off look. Standing up from his chair and walking towards me I felt the urge to run but I was too scared to do so. I suddenly had a great respect for people in horror movies who run into another room instead of out the front door; at least they're running.

"What did you say to me?" He said hissed, his jaw clenched.

"I said, fuck you, Luke Hemmings." I replied, trying to keep my cool even though my voice wobbled at the end.

Grabbing my wrists, Luke yanked me towards him and held both my hands in a lock. His face was inches away from mine and his eyes were dark. I didn't think he was capable of anything so horrible because he was probably a decent guy at home with his parents and whoever, but in this moment, the look he gave me, I thought he was going to kill me. I genuinely thought he was going to kill me.

"Don't you ever speak to me like that again, you ugly little troll." I could physically feel the anger radiating from him.

"You've spoke to me like that for the last four years." I whispered. Even though I said it quietly I could tell I'd pissed him off.

"Your going to regret the day you ever moved to this town. Because one day, you're going to get whats coming to you, Mila Mills." Letting go of my hands, he threw them down with such a force that I fell down onto the wet sand. As I started to get up he leaned down next to me and grabbed the back of my neck. "Got it?"

I nodded and he let go of me. I scrambled to my feet and ran in the direction of my house as Luke and the rest watched me. And now they knew where I lived.
