Chapter 9 - Premonition

The morning was quiet...

The two ate breakfast and headed off to the potions room.

"Next god, well, goddess, is Khione, the goddess of snow. To summon her we will need frost in a bottle. For that we will need to collect Earth's coldest material." explained Otis.

"My soul?" replied Alex.

"Was that joke?" asked Otis.

"Yeah," said Alex.

"Good, well there is no protection against the coldest material, so you're gonna have to get a bottle and just fill it up, afterwards you'll slowly start to freeze to death and turn into a cube of ice, but the only way to fix that is to dip the spot the frost touched you in molten lava." explained Otis.

"Why me!?" asked Alex.

"One, you're stronger than me, two, this is your Trial, not mine." said Otis.

"Alright, but can you at least-" said Alex as he was cut off and the two were teleported in some glacier. Everything was made of ice, the walls, the ceiling, the floor, then there was a shining blue light down  small hole. He quickly felt goosebumps form on his arm.

"There it is," said Otis as he stared at the light then at the floor. "Whatever you do, don't look at the light for too long, or it'll freeze your brain and there's nothing that can cure that. Also if you fall in, you're done." said Otis as he handed Alex an empty glass bottle. "Just quickly fill it up with frost and when you're done, slide the bottle to me."

Alex opened the bottle and approached the light. He grasped onto a stalagmite and filled the bottle with frost. He wrapped is arm around the stalagmite as he closed the bottle. It snapped and he fell, grasping onto the ground and the bottle slid to the edge. Otis used telekinesis to slide it into his direction as Alex's hands slipped and time slowed down. He was gonna die, and he knew it. He closed his eyes and prepared for his final moments as he hit something solid.

He opened his eyes to find him in an area filled with lava. Alex felt his limbs go numb as the numbness started reaching his body and his head. He was paralyzed, and the look on Otis's face told him his limbs were frozen and the frost was reaching his body. Otis carried Alex as Alex couldn't move or speak. He felt the numbness reach his heart as he felt no heartbeat and his vision stated to fade to black.

He couldn't see anything...

He was dead...

Until...

He woke up gasping for air as he moved around to find his limbs perfectly fine and his heart beating normally.

"Alexander, are you okay?" asked Otis.

"Define okay." responded Alex as he looked at his arms.

"I'll take that as a yes." said Otis.

"Okay, please stop interrupting me when you're about to-" said Alex as he was cut off and the two were back in the potions room. "I swear, one day I will annoy you."

"You already do that, well anyways what you need to do to summon Khione, you need to throw the bottle of frost on the ground. A light will appear. Don't look at it. Are you ready?" said Otis.

"Yeah," said Alex as the two were teleported into an empty area in the wilderness. Otis handed Alex the bottle and backed away as Alex threw the bottle on the ground and shut his eyes. After a few seconds the light cleared and a woman appeared. Alex noticed that the area around him, which was a nice grassy area with trees and a pond, turned into a snowy area, the ground full of snow, the tree's leaves all gone, and the pond frozen. The woman looked like a normal person and had black hair and wore a blue dress.

"What is it that you need?" asked Khione.

"I'm here for the Trial." responded Alex.

"Of course, your Trial is to go into the Crystal Cave and find my lost crystal. My idiot brother, Calaides, lost it there. It blended in with the other crystals, so it'll also show you the future, but I believe my crystal is the one with the most vivid premonition. If you retrieve it, just call my name, I'll be waiting here." explained Khione as she vanished in a white light and the snow cleared, the tree's leaves grew back, and the pond unfroze.

Otis teleported the two to the cave.

"Be careful, if you look too long into the crystals, you might might see things you never want to find out." said Otis as Alex walked around ignoring images of the future, until he was drawn in by one crystal. He stared at it and found him looking into the future. He saw him holding a blade and staring at horrifying creatures. They looked so ugly, so tormented. 

Demons. Alex thought as another premonition flashed. He saw him walking in a crowd of people wearing strange boots as black particles rose from the ground and people collapsed to their death.

Another premonition. He saw Earth turn into a wasteland. Forest fires were spreading across the world, grass was withering away and dying, lakes and rivers were draining and turning to lava.

Then there was a horrifying premonition. He saw something he didn't wanna see. A lot of blood. Tears streaming down Alex's face.

Alex looked away, almost tearing up as he collected the crystal and headed to Otis.

"Did you get it?" asked Otis.

"Y-yeah," stuttered Alex.

"You saw something bad didn't you?" asked Otis.

"I really want to get that image out of my head, the world was a living Hell. I saw things that would break the human soul." said Alex.

"As Death himself once told me, 'Souls can be tortured, corrupted, but never broken." said Otis.

"Then my soul has been corrupted." said Alex.

After returning back to the original location, Alex called for Khione as she appeared and the land turned into a frosty area. Alex gave Khione the crystal as she gave him her charm and got closer to Alex. She put two fingers on his forehead as he closed his eyes and forgot every premonition he saw in the cave.

"Thank you so much." said Alex as she nodded and vanished in the white light, leaving the wilderness how it was before.

"That's another Trial complete." said Otis. "For the next one, I can't believe I'm saying this, but let's go to the moon..."
