CHAPTER I
Meet the non-Anthropologist Margaret Mead
CITY LIBRARY

“Hmn…”
Deep cerulean eyes hidden by highly reflective eyeglasses shifted to and fro book titles as its owner walked sideways along the bookshelves’ length. She was holding two books already, and was in the process of looking for the last one.
“Ah.” came monotonously when she finally found that book on Anthropology. It was for her University class, and she was also interested in reading more about her namesake.
Margaret Mead. That was her name. She had the same name as the most famous female anthropologist in the world. Her birthday was, after all, 16th of December—same as the Anthropologist (sometimes she mused that her mother forced her out to get the same birthday)—and they happened to have the same last name (Mead was a common last name… somewhere) and so her parents decided to name her after a famous Mead.
Who knew? Maybe she’d become famous, too.
Yes, she had very hopeful parents. And she paused at a recurring follow-up.
That was before…
When she still had them. Parents.
“Is there anything else, Miss Mead?” She was pulled out of her trance by the Mrs. Janken, the librarian, partly thankful she was woken up from a deep daydream. She nodded and handed the three books she took. The first two were more ‘important’ so she put the academic book for last.
The woman only smiled and did what she had habitually done for most of her life. Margaret watched the Latina woman in her 40s as she did so. She knew this woman for a few weeks now, ever since she moved in with her grandfather. Ms. Janken finished and handed her the books with a smile.
“Thank you.” She said, and then looked at the woman’s face closely. “And you look happy today Ms. Janken, did anything better-than-usual happen?”
The woman laughed. “Oh, yes.” She answered before she looked around and behind her. “Sir Chief and Maya were finally together!”
“Who?”
“That couple from that show!” She said and Margaret only stared. The woman light-heartedly shook her head. “Oh, nevermind.”
“Have a nice day Ms. Janken, hope that couple stays together.”
“I hope so, too.”
Margaret smirked and turned around, heading to the glass door. The strong wind greeted her on her way out. It would have been nice feeling if smoke wasn’t accompanying the healthy oxygen by the un-satisfactory number of trees around. There had been a lot of ‘Go Green’ projects in the city and around the world, but they had a long way to go before reaching a decent result.
She hand-combed her deep black hair, she inherited from her mother of Asian descent, and then silently apologized to the passer-by that almost lost her balance when the glare of the sun, reflected by her highly-reflective eyeglasses, hit her directly on the eyes.
