Whenever Peter feels sad or insecure at night, he changes into rat form and wander around in the castle. It's easy for him to get out, and he wouldn't get caught.
The marauders would never notice it. He has a habit anyway of going unnoticed. That is his biggest problem. Sometimes he feels like nobody notices him, nobody cares about him.
He has wandered around much more than the other marauders, he knows the castle in and out, therefore he is a great help when mapping the marauders map. Finally he has something that he is good at.
