My brother had asked me to watch his cat while he and his wife went on their honeymoon and since Evan was in Japan snowboarding and I had the house to myself, I thought it was a great idea., I loved cats and I was so excited. It had been a week since he had brought the cat over and currently I was lying curled up on the couch with the cat sprawled out at my feet. Evan loved cats and I thought it would be such a nice surprise for him to come home to a cute little kitty.
My phone buzzed and I looked at the message:
On my way home now, Love. Xx Evan
I wanted to surprise Evan with his favourite meal so I went out to the grocery store to buy some food for dinner and left the back door open for the cat.
When I got home I saw something in the middle of the street. I parked my car and walked over to it. It was the cat. The cat was dead in the middle of the street. Unsure of what to do I called animal control and they came and took the cat away. In shock I wandered back into my house and laid down on my white duvet resting my head against the sand colour pillows. After about half an hour I rolled over and reached for my phone and called my best friend, Mia.
“Hello, Love.” She answered in a tone too happy for the news I had to tell her.
“Mia?” I didn’t wait for her response. “So you know how I’ve been watching the cat while Jake is away on vacation?” I asked.
“Uh, yes?” she replied, still clueless as to why I called.
“Well, while I was gone the cat got hit by a car and well, it didn’t end well.” I said, still in shock myself.
“Oh my god, Louise, what are you going to do?”
“Well I have to tell him…right?” I asked, already knowing the answer.
“Yes of course and the sooner the better.” Mia answered, fuelling my guilt.
“But I mean, now isn’t the right time. He’s not even home and I’m sure he is having a fabulous time. I don’t want to ruin it.” I told her, and it was the truth. I wouldn’t want a call from him while I was on vacation, let alone my honey moon, telling me my pet had died.
“Well when are you going to tell him?” She questioned.
“Soon, he gets back soon. I’ll tell him then. I just feel so dirty.” I shuddered, thinking about the dead cat in the street.
“Why? Is it because you think you murdered it, so now you have a murder on your hands? Well first of all, it’s just a cat and second of all you’re not a murderer Mads, these things happen all the time. Just buy him a new cat. What kind of cat was it? A rescue? Just go to the rescue centre and get him a new one.”
“I don’t think he’d want that. I just hope he doesn’t get too angry and like tell me he never wants to see me again or kicks me out when I try to tell him.”
“Louise, you are just being over dramatic. It’s just a cat. He’ll get over it. He’s your brother and he loves you. He is certainly not going to kick you out of his house. Relax.”
