A/N: I do not own any part of the Avengers. I do not own Bucky Barnes/The Winter Solider. I do not own you. I do not own 'Tattooed Heart' by Ariana Grande. I do own the plot. Please, keep that in mind. Thank you.
Bucky finally had a day off, but that meant he was left to think. The worst part was (y/n) wasn't there to calm his racing mind as he lay in their shared bed. Bucky's mind bounced from last night's dance to being the retired Winter Soldier to being Bucky the Avenger to the 1940's to all the time he missed.
Though he couldn't exactly remember the 40's, Bucky missed them. He didn't miss them like Steve, who remembered everything. Bucky missed what the 40's stood for. There he was just plain James Buchanan Barnes, not the person who murdered dozens of people.
'Last night was fun though. Yeah, think about last night.' Bucky told himself.
Steve and Shannon invited Bucky and (y/n) to dinner. Super simple- chicken, peas, and roasted potatoes. (y/n) even made cupcakes for dessert and Shannon had lucky bought a tub of vanilla ice cream.
After talking and laughing for about two hours, Steve asked Shannon to dance and so Bucky asked (y/n) too. The couples slow danced until a particular song came out and that got Shannon thinking about swing dancing. Shannon asked Steve if he could show the group what swing was back in the '40s.
Bucky didn't miss the cautious glance Steve threw his way, so Bucky pressed Steve to give a demonstration. Steve showed them beginner steps of swing even if he didn't get his first dance. Then Shannon surprised everyone by spinning Steve. Bucky got to twirl (y/n) out and bring them into a sweetheart's hug, where they stayed and just rocked back and forth. Overall, the night went extremely well, everything went to bed smiling and lighthearted.
However, as Bucky lay in bed, he wished he had something from the '40s. He had Steve, who remembered everything, but it wasn't the same just listening to the stories of a time that was taken from him. Bucky... had an idea. He jumped out of bed, got dressed, and started searching for Steve.
"Morning, Buck." Steve greeted from the sink as Bucky got off the elevator and entered Steve's floor at the Avenger's Tower.
"Good morning, Bucky." Shannon lightly smiled over her coffee.
"Morning, guys. Steve, I need to ask you something?"
"What's up?"
"I need to ask you about the '40s." Shannon got up to leave, thinking this could be a sensitive topic. "You can stay, Shannon, you can help Steve." Bucky explained. Shannon looked at Bucky oddly, but sat anyway.
"What was... trending... no trendly... no, no trendy...?" For the life of him, Bucky couldn't figure out the accursed word.
"I don't know. 'Trending' is new to me too." Steve sighs, still frustrated with the day's lingual, while Shannon smiled behind her coffee mug.
"Whatever, moving on. What was popular during the '40s?"
"'Trendy' does mean popular, guys." Shannon clarifies.
"Okay, thanks, Shannon," Steve smiles. "Ummm... girls wore skirts and/or dresses. Guys wore suits, if you could afford them. Swing music. Theater."
"No, not that," Bucky breathes, shaking his head. "I mean specifically for guys."
"Oh... Bucky, why are you asking me? Me back in the '40s was not considered... trendy?" The question in Steve's eyes as he looked to Shannon for help. She nods, simply repeating 'trendy'.
Bucky finally lets out a frustrated groan, then sighs just as dejectedly. "Come on, Steve. There has to be something that's not skirts, shirts, swing music, and theater."
