Ethan!

The rest of the day was a blur. Me, Hale and Nolan kept walking past the hall doors, only to run to our next class when we heard Emma screaming.

She sounded like a wounded animal. The sound reverberated off the walls and made the glass shake in the doors.

I can honestly say that I never thought anything like this would happen. Looking back, that makes me feel so stupid.

We all have powers, so there was bound to be some rivalry, with some people thinking the others were scum…

I shuddered, memories of that morning flashing through my mind.

I’d rather not think about that again.

When I got home I rang Ethan, I know I can’t tell him about the powers, but I can tell him we fell out, can’t I?

‘Ethan?’ I whispered, gulping back the sobs that were threatening to overcome me.

‘Yeah, what’s wrong Gem?’ he asked, obviously hearing me struggling against the sobs.

‘I – I….’ I couldn’t finish the sentence. The tears began streaming again and I was completely overcome by heaving sobs.

‘Ethan?’ I hiccupped into the phone, but all I got was a beeping. He’d hung up on me.

I threw my phone across the room and curled up on my bed, determined to cry the pain out before Mum called me for dinner.

After a few minutes there was a tentative knock on my bedroom door.

I sat up and wiped the tears from my face, hugging my knees to my chest as I called out: ‘Come in,’

I took a few deep breaths as I waited to see who would enter my room. Tom walked in, making me rest my face on my knees so that he couldn’t see that I’d been crying.

‘You’ve got a visitor,’ he muttered before I heard a new set of footsteps walk into my room.

I peered up to see Ethan stood there looking stricken.

‘Ethan!’ I sobbed, running into his arms and letting the sobs take over again.

‘Wow Gem, what’s up?’ he whispered into my ear as he led me to my bed, letting me curl up next to him.

‘Em-Emma…’ I stuttered, hiccupping violently, ‘C-called me s-scum,’ I cried, burying my face in his shoulder.

‘I’m sure she didn’t mean it,’ he soothed, holding me at arm’s length, ‘Why would she give you up? You’re amazing…’ he trailed off, a small blush tingeing his cheeks as I giggled.

‘That’s why you're my boyfriend,’ I muttered, leaning in to kiss him gently on the lips.

‘Are you okay now?’ he asked, wiping away the tears.

‘Yeah…’ I whispered, lying down next to him, with my head on his chest.

We both fell asleep like that, until Tom called us both for dinner.

‘Guys…’ he moaned when he walked in and saw us just waking up, ‘Not when I’m here?’

Me and Ethan laughed following him downstairs where mum and dad were waiting.

After dinner Ethan said goodbye and apologised for stopping me from going to ballet.

‘Never mind, its just one day,’ I muttered, surprised that he remembered, ‘I don’t think I would have gone anyway…’

He chuckled, kissing me on the forehead before walking down the front path.

I sighed, maybe I could get used to life without Emma.

Maybe.
