The Rest Of My Life

The best summer of my life began with a long list of summer homework.
"Twenty books? Thirty blog posts? Ten page essay? Kill me now." I shove the ten foot pile of brain racking crap into a bin that I will hopefully forget about. The summer homework has gotten worse and worse every year. No more time with friends. No more beach. No more boyfriends. Nothing. My summer has turned into a second school year minus the teachers. Not wanting to stress much longer on this awful topic, I pull out my phone and scroll through my favorite playlist.

And as always, I kick it off with Miley Cyrus, keeping it on shuffle.
Halfway through Last Hope, I get a call from my friend, Audrey.
"What's up," I ask, answering the phone.
"Hannah's having a party tonight and like always, I have nothing better to do. You coming?" Hannah has a party basically every other week in her oversized house. Audrey and I were never close friends with her but we have run into her in the mall a few times. I never have anything better to do either, but I was beginning to feel a little drowsy from some allergy medication I had taken earlier, so I lied.
"You know, I was gonna get a head start on all that homework we have, I mean-"
"Yeah, no you're not," she cuts off. "Get dressed, I'm going to be outside your house at seven." I sigh as she hangs up and I reluctantly get out of my comfy bed and tramp over to my closet.
A half hour later, my entire closet is on the floor and I am undecided. What a surprise. I FaceTime Audrey and she tells me to where her favorite dress. Of course. I pick it up from the bottom of the pile and head into the bathroom. I put on the dress and look at myself in the full body mirror. The dress is sleeveless and to my knees. Light shines off of it from every angle, reflecting off the turquoise sequins. I smile at my pale but reasonably fit body. I was always grateful for my body figure. Every other girl was complaining that they couldn't gain or lose weight but I've always been satisfied.
Stepping away from the mirror, I start to apply my simple makeup and put my long brown hair up in a high ponytail. Finishing off the overwhelming look, I put Audrey's favorite shoes. Knee-high black high heel boots. I basically looked like comic girl in the end.
As seven o'clock rolls around the corner, I grab my phone and bag and head out the door to get into Audrey's car.
"Oh my gosh. You look gorgeous, as always. You can never go wrong with that outfit, I tell ya," Audrey says only a moment after I shut the car door.
"Speak for yourself," I say eyeballing her graphic tee tank top that has an oddly adorable kitten with a rainbow spilling out of its mouth and skinny jeans tight enough to kill. My favorite part was her white high tops. Audrey has really harsh features that bring out, well basically everything. Her big blue eyes are fanned by her spider-leg eyelashes. Freckles coat over her up-turned nose. But by far, the first thing people notice is her snow blonde pixie cut. She is most definitely considered beautiful in our school.
Where Audrey's features are very harsh, mine on the other hand are more on the soft side. My nose is round and freckle-free. I have tiny brown eyes and high cheekbones. My hair is to my waist and straighter than a number two pencil. Audrey's shocking appearance usually draws the attention away from me but I'm not complaining, I'm a pretty shy person.
As we pull into Hannah's party, I notice the same thing that I see at every Hannah Hillside party. A group of conceded jocks are laughing at other "less cool" kids while drinking out of red solo cups which are probably filled with alcohol. On the other side of the party, a group of self-centered and self-obsessed Prom Queen stereotypes sit in chairs on their bedazzled phones.
"I'm so glad I came tonight," I mutter under my breath.
"Oh, could you lighten up for once? You could meet the love of your life here, or maybe even...," I doze off as I search for a pair of interesting eyes. Just before Audrey finishes her dreadfully long lecture, I meet eyes with a tall boy, perhaps seventeen years old and built with muscles. His brown eyes strangely do not leave mine even after he realizes I'm staring at him.
"Okay, okay, Audrey. I get it. You wait here, I'll go get us some drinks," I lie.
"Finally having some fun for once, jeez." I push away her rude remark and begin the walk towards the rest of my life.
