"You make me feel alive." I smiled, resting my head on his shoulder as we sat on a bench overlooking the lake. "How is that possible?" I asked, sighing with content. "I wish I knew."
"Avril! Avril! Wake up!" I heard my boyfriend yell as I sat up on the couch. We had just moved in together around five or six months ago and he never got the memo that I was a light sleeper. "Sorry." I began. "I was watching some weird show on TV. I must have fallen asleep." John's lips formed a tight line. "You know how I feel about sleeping on the couch. Next time, if you're tired, go to the bedroom." He finished before getting up and leaving me to think about the dream I just had. I've been having this reoccurring dream for a while now. I'd be sitting on a bench at this beautiful lake house and I was with a guy. Each time he would tell me how much he cared about me, how happy I made him. But when I would try to look at his face, it was blurry. I couldn't make it out and I didn't know how to feel about that.
John came back downstairs holding a dufflebag and a water bottle. "Where are you going?" I asked, rising to my feet. "I have a business trip. It should last no longer than a week." I nodded, deciding against pressing on the matter. Business trips seemed to be coming up a lot lately and whenever I asked about them, John would get a little angry and it startled me sometimes. "Well, I'll see you when you get back then." I stated. He kissed my cheek and headed out the front door, leaving me to my thoughts.
After about twenty minutes of sitting around the house doing nothing, I decided to take a walk and clear my head. I slipped on my sandals, grabbed my phone, and left the house. The weather was nice, not too hot and not too cold so no complaints there. I smiled as a warm breeze passed by, brushing my hair a bit. For some reason I felt like today would be a good day. It was only the afternoon but I had a feeling. I almost never had a feeling.
I came across an ice cream shop a few blocks away from my house while walking. Stopping, I looked through the window to see what it looked like from the inside. This place had to have been new. I've walked this way a thousand times before and I've never seen it up and running. With curiosity getting the best of me, I walked away from the window and went inside, the smell of strawberries and vanilla hitting my nose. Standing by the door, I looked around. This place had a homey feeling. I felt at ease here. Not to mention the decor. The walls were covered in Polaroids. I walked around looking at them. There were pictures of families, couples, nature. It was all so beautiful and I was mesmerized by all of it. There had to have been thousands of Polaroids, hundreds of thousands. All of them lined so neatly along each other, it was breathtaking.
"Can I help you with something, miss?" A voice asked me, breaking me out of my trance. I spun around, startled and too embarrassed to look up. My cheeks burned as I stared at my feet. "Um, uh, I'm sorry." I stammered out. The voice chuckled. Was this guy laughing at me? I looked up to meet the brown eyes of a very good looking stranger. He had dark brown hair, falling slightly over his eyebrows but pushed over to the side. He was tall, and he wore a red and white shirt with his sleeves rolled up exposing tattoos. Man, it was hard not to stare. "Its okay." He said. "A lot of people come in and get lost in the photos. It was my idea to do it. To have Polaroids all over." I smiled. "Its nice, really nice." I said, turning to face the wall. "Who took all of these?" I asked, tracing my finger along a photo of a child playing in the rain. "I did." He said, looking at the photo with me. "Wow, that's amazing." I turned back to face him. "Why do you work at an ice cream shop if you're so amazing at taking pictures?" I asked, intrigued. "I don't work here. A friend of mine does. I just help out when I can." He laughed, stopping slowly to smile at me. I nodded. "Well since I'm here, I'm thinking I should get some ice cream now, huh?" I said, smiling while we walked up to the front of the store.
The handsome stranger walked behind the counter and up to the cash register. "So what kind of ice cream do you want?" He asked, fingers ready to punch in my order. I looked up at the menu, thinking. Deciding against being complicated, I kept it simple. "Just a vanilla ice cream cone please. One scoop should do." I said. He nodded, punching it in and going over to fix up my cone. As I waited, I picked up on the music playing in the shop. Little Bird by Ed Sheeran. Man, I love this song!
"Here you go." The guy handed me my cone. I took it and reached into my pocket to pay for it. "How much?" I asked, pulling out my wallet. "Don't worry about it. Its on the house." I smiled, our eyes meeting as I slid my wallet back in my pocket. "So what's your name?" He asked, putting some money in the cash register. "My name is Avril." I replied, feeling my cheeks heat up. How is it that I'm internally giddy about this guy when I have a long term boyfriend? "Well that's a beautiful name, Avril. That's really beautiful." He commented, giving me that same smile that kept making me blush. "Thank you." I said, getting ready to lick my ice cream cone before it was knocked out of my hands.
"So I tell you I'm going away on a business trip and you take this as a sign to be a whore?!" I heard John shout as I turned to face him, shaking. "N-no, I only got ice cream baby I swear." I said, trying not to make him even more upset than he already was. "Excuse me sir, but do you know this woman?" The guy asked John, and it had occurred to me that I had never asked him his name. "Do I know this woman? This woman is my GIRLFRIEND!" John yelled, grabbing me by the arm and yanking me away from the counter. "You're coming with me." He grunted, pulling me to the door. I looked back and met the shocked brown eyes of the handsome stranger I had just met. His eyes were swirling with emotions. And just as I was pulled out the door, I thought I caught one of them.
Love. It was love at first sight.
