John loved his wife Amy, even if she was a bit of a crazy cat lady. So he put up with it when she brought home a stray, and didn't complain when it kept having more and more kittens. John didn't even care when the total number of cats reached double digits, as long as Amy was happy. Every day he would go into the small storage room in their house and scoop out bowls and bowls of cat food for their 'babies'. Life was good for John and Amy. At least it was until a cat ran away.
The cat was Smokey, a dark grey tom cat whom they both loved very much. One day Amy had been spending time with the cats when she noticed he hadn't been around for a while. They waited, but Smokey never came back. Amy was devastated, but also a bit scared. What if the other cats started to run away? John assured her that he wouldn't let that happen, and her fears vanished.
There was an extra refrigerator in the storage room, but nobody ever used it. However, about a week had passed since Smokey ran away when John noticed something strange. Pooling near the base of the refrigerator was a strange red liquid. He told this to Amy, who brushed it off saying she had spilled a bit of red paint there, and that there was nothing to worry about. John took this explanation without a second thought, reprimanding himself for being so silly.
Another couple days passed by and cats started to go missing, but something was off. Amy wasn't as upset about the loss of these cats. In fact, she didn't seem upset at all! That wasn't the only thing that seemed off, though. John couldn't quite put his finger on it, but it seemed as if there was a weird smell coming from the storage room. He was also wondering why Amy spilled red paint there, since she hadn't told him about any projects she was doing. After some investigating John realized something that unnerved him quite a bit- they didn't even have any red paint! He decided to keep quiet about it though, lest he upset Amy.
Cats kept going missing, and their numbers soon dwindled to only three. Amy was still showing no signs that she cared. Once they had but one cat left with Amy still not showing any signs of sadness, John decided that he had to get to the bottom of it all, starting with the pool of liquid. That night he waited for Amy to fall asleep, then snuck out of the house to the storage room.
Being as quiet as he could be, John entered the storage room. Once in there he switched on his flashlight and pointed it towards the refrigerator. As expected, the pool was still there, along with the strange smell. That was when John noticed something else, something strange. The pool of liquid was coming from the base of the refrigerator! Taking slow, cautious steps, John walked towards the refrigerator until he was standing right in front of it. He reached out his hand, wrapped it around the door handle, and slowly pulled it open.
The flashlight clattered to the floor as John took in the sight before him. All of their missing cats hadn't run away. Instead, their lifeless bodies had been stuffed inside the refrigerator, each in a different stage of decay. John raised his hand to his mouth to stifle a scream. Who had done this? And the pool of liquid- it was blood! He backed away from the refrigerator, determined to get as far away as possible. Suddenly, the light switched on, startling John. He whirled around to find Amy standing in the doorway, a strange mixture of anger and sadness spread across her face.
"Ah, I see you've found our babies. Before you say anything, allow me to explain. I knew that they would all run away sooner or later, but I didn't want that. I wanted my precious kitty cats to stay with us forever. So, I killed them and stored them here, where they'll always be close by. To have the things I love with me at all times, is that too much to ask? After hearing this, I bet you want to run, don't you? To call the cops or something. But I love you, John. I don't want you to leave me. That's why I want you to join them." Amy took a step towards John, brandishing a knife in her right hand. "Don't leave me, John. Stay with us forever." And with knife in hand, Amy lunged.
