Prologue
"Two days until the wedding rehearsal," I whispered to David. "You know what that means?"
David looked at me, taking his eyes off the road. "It means the Wedding is close," I explained. He smiled and kissed me on the cheek. "And I'm bursting with joy," He beamed and added a grin.
"Eyes on the road," I reminded. He looked back at the road.
There was a moment of silence. One that's comfortable where all you hear is your own thoughts wandering around the inside of your head.
I glanced at David. "We should have kids." I blurted.
He widened his eyes and looked over to me. "Huh?."
I sighed. "If you don't want to, we don't have to. I'm sorry, I just kind of imagined how it would feel to dress up my little girl in a dress with a bow in her hair..or my little boy in sneakers. You know?"
He looked at me for a moment before setting his eyes back on the road.
"You must've forgoten that we're never going to get any sleep, and how we have to change diapers,
and pay for field trips-"
"Forget it," I muttered and stared out the window.
David loved kids, he did. But I guess he was right, I guess I just didn't understand how hard it is to have your own kids. I was not ready, but I wanted kids.
After a long moment without speaking to each other, David took a deep breath.
"But yeah, I guess it would be cool to teach my little boy to play baseball," He mumble and added a smile.
"We could name him Matthew..or James, and the girl- well for her name you could choose."
I smiled. "How about..Hayley, or maybe Ashley, or Katie."
He nodded, approving. "Any would go well."
I grinned. "I love you."
He smiled and gazed into my eyes.
"I love you more," He replied and stroked my cheek.
I looked at the road and screamed; a big red truck was coming our way, about to crush us. It crashed into us and the car kept spinning and spinning, I couldn't handle it.
The car was thrown onto some grass, and into a tree.
I was bleeding on my leg and arm, the pain was unbearable.
I looked over to David, who was bleeding from his head, lying still.
"David!" I shouted in horror.
I continued to shout his name, but got no reply.
I put my ear against his chest and listened for any sign of life.
But he was gone.
Right there, right then.
"David.." I whispered as tears began to fall across my cheek.
