"Yo, Kirst, what's up?" Scott held his phone in one hand while stirring pancake mix with the other. He'd stupidly chosen to stir with his not-as-good hand, but now it was too late to switch, so he was just trying not to drop his phone.
"Scott, I have a new patient!" Scott's best friend, Kirstin, was on the other end of the phone call, and practically screaming in his ear with excitement.
"Kirstie, you have new patients everyday. It's not anything new. You've had that job for, like, three years."
"Yeah, I know, but this one's different!"
"You say that every time, Kirst, they can't be-"
"Scott! He's adorable, he's very gay, just your type if I'm remembering correctly, and he's mute! But he's so chill, you know?
"You're a therapist. Nobody new there is chill, from what I've heard. Plus, you need to stop trying to hook me up with your patients. It never works." Scott sighed, remembering his last relationship with a man named Alex, and rested his spoon on the side of the bowl.
"Okay, well, obviously he's not perfectly at ease with everything in his life, but he's just so sweet! All he wants is a friend, Scott, someone that cares for him. I'm not trying to hook you up. Would you just come down tomorrow and meet him?"
The blonde knew there was no getting out of meeting this new person, so he just rolled his eyes and said, "Fine. What time's his sesh?"
"3:00. And his name is Mitch."
"Kirstie, I'm not getting up at 3 am to meet someone! God, that's ridiculous. I don't know how you could ask that of me."
"Oh, shut up, dork," Kirstin replied, but Scott could hear her giggling. "I'll see you tomorrow, then? Byeee!" Then she hung up.
What did I do to end up with her? Scott thought to himself as he set his phone down on the island behind him and threw a pan onto the stove so he could cook dinner for himself.
Two minutes later, he was texting Kirstin.
do you know if mitch likes pancakes?

The next morning, Scott felt nervous. He had zero ideas why he was feeling that way, but he just was.
Maybe it was the idea of actually having a friend who wasn't busy everyday except for holidays.
Or maybe it was because he'd never met someone who was, well, mute before.
Whatever it was, as he thought about it more, his anxiety was skyrocketing, and he began to doubt everything.
Am I wearing the right clothes? Do I need to dress nicely? No, that's stupid, I've been there before and I've never been more than casual. What does Mitch even do to communicate? Am I going to feel bad for talking around him or something? How does anything even affect me? It's just another patient.

FanfictionBackstory and life of Mitch and Scott as introduced in Silence (the one-shot). I'd suggest reading that first to understand this, but if you stumbled across this first, that's fine too!
