Chapter 1

It was the last day of school until our four-day weekend: Friday and Monday were bank holidays. It had been almost a month since I turned fifteen in May, nothing special just another year older, still the same Charlotte Goodyear (well Charley to my friends). My hair was cut in the same slashed bronze bob, lightly curved figure, still only just scraping five foot nine, emerald eyes sharp as ever (or icy blue, but, you know it depends on the light) and even now wearing my daring rock star chic style.

Last bell finally rang and you wouldn’t believe how glad I was to get away from it all! It wasn’t because I hated school – no, I rather enjoyed it, I like the subjects I chose and I have a whole host of friends with varying interests – but more because everyone had been annoying me recently. The smallest thing would set me off in a passionate rage; even my best friends weren’t safe. Only just this lunchtime I fell out with Esmee over a pencil, I mean seriously, a pencil? I mean there were people actually coming up to me and asking me if it was my “time of the month,” I mean the cheek of it! Normally I would’ve slapped them for it, but I thought it would only make them more convinced of their accusations. Nevertheless I wish it were that time, because at least that would give some reason to my irrational behaviour. Oh well now I can have a nice relaxing break from it all.

I woke from my thoughts as a hand gently brushed my arm. I recognised the face; a boy, two or so years older than me – I think he is in lower sixth from – his oak leaf green eyes stared out at me under a mop of chestnut brown hair. I’m pretty sure his name is Matt, Matt Smith I believe; I don’t really know him but we always say “Hello” when we see each other: which isn’t often because he has a completely different timetable. He slowed his walking, and I slowed mine, until we were both standing still with myriad of people rushing around us, swarming to get out of the tiny school gates.

“Hey,” I greeted him politely unsure of what he wanted to say.

“Um, yeah, hi,” Matt paused. His lean body standing very close to mine: he was a good head taller than me, I inadvertently realised. “Um,” he coughed “Just, you know, text me if you need to talk; anything,” he mumbled quickly, pressing a scrunched up piece of paper into my hand: then hurrying to join the rest of the pupils out of school.

I just stood there for a few moments, “What on earth?” I breathed lowly. I shook myself then headed out the gates on the walk home.
