I began to play with my long dark blonde hair like I did when I was nervous. It’s going to be okay, I told myself.
The flight was only an hour long. Once we got to Sydney, I would figure things out. For now, I needed to sleep. I pulled out my iPod and put my headphones in. Before I knew it, I was fast asleep.
There was a high pitched scream and immediately I knew who’s it was. “Cory! Cory where are you!?” I yelled into the darkness.
Where was I?
I looked around and the dark changed into a blinding white room. I heard the scream again. This time I ran for him. I searched frantically.
As I ran the scene changed I was in the ocean and I was drowning. A storm was brewing and soon enough the waves were coming over my head. No, no, no!
I screamed out.
Not the ocean! Anything but the ocean!
I heard Cory’s loud scream and saw him in the distance right before his head went under the water.
I forced myself to swim for him. I couldn’t lose him too! I swam as hard and as fast as I could. I took a deep breath and plunged underwater. Where was he!?
He was gone. No, this couldn’t be happening! I couldn’t lose him too!
I swam back to the surface and saw him face-down in the ocean. I swam as quickly as I could to Cory, but before I could touch him, I woke up with a start.
I was breathing heavy and Cory was next to me. He was alive. And he was screaming? No, laughing. At what though? His movie was over so what could it be?
Then I saw the hand swoop down and grab a Cheerio out of his bag. “What the…?”
“Hello!” Piped a boy with blonde hair and green eyes from the seat in front of me.
“Uh, hi?” I said.
“I’m Michael and this is Ashton,” said another boy sitting next to him with black hair. I noticed he had a few streaks of blue in it, “are you a fan?”
“Fan? Fan of what?” I asked curiously.
A boy sitting across the aisle sighed. “Who are you?” I asked.
“I’m Calum and this is Luke.” He said gesturing to him and his friend.
The boy who I guess is Luke nodded a greeting.
“And what’s your name?” Ashton asked.
“I’m Alana and this is—“
“Cory.” Calum finished for me.
“How did you know that?” I said.
“We’ve been playing with him while you were asleep.” Said Michael.
“Oh, thanks…” I said sheepishly. I hope I wasn’t drooling when I was sleeping.
We chatted for a while longer. Calum actually had the nerve to ask if Cory was my son. How stupid was that? I told him that Cody was my brother.
“Yeah, that makes more sense…” Calum said obliviously embarrassed.
“So how old are you Cory?” Ashton asked him.
Cory looked at me and then I nodded at him. He held out four fingers and shouted, “Five!” which make me giggle.
I pulled out his thumb and told him that that was five. A flight attendants voice blared over the almost empty plane, “Please do anything last minute, such as using the restroom, removing or putting something in your bag, or stretching your legs before we land in Sydney, Australia,” Then she went on with this whole speech about how it was a pleasure flying with us, but I tuned her and turned my attention to Cory. “Do you need to use the bathroom?” I asked him.
He nodded his head furiously.
I unbuckled his seat belt and did the same to mine, but before I could stand up, Calum had already taken Cody’s hand and volunteered to take him.
I was a little weary about this, but decided I could trust him.
“So Alana, where are you from?” Michael asked.
“I’m not really from anywhere.” I told him as calmly as I could.
“But—“ Michael said before I cut him off.
“I don’t really want to go into it, but Cody and I are orphans. We don’t have a home, because no one wants us. We were supposed to be going to New Zealand to say with our aunt for the summer, who we’ve never even met, but now we’re landing in Sydney and I have to figure out a way there.” I told him quickly.
There was a moment of silence until someone who I wasn’t expecting spoke up. “You could stay with us until you figure out a way to New Zealand.” Said Luke. It was the first time he has said anything the whole flight.
“That’s a great idea Luke!” Ashton praised.
“What’s a great idea?” asked Calum who was holding hands with Cory.
“That Alana and Cory could stay with us until they find a way to New Zealand.” Michael explained.
Cory started jumping up and down. “Please, please, pleaseeee!” he begged.
I million thoughts raced through my head at once. We didn’t even know them, but Cory needed that father figure even if it was just for a few days, and plus the boys loved him. They seemed really nice. And how could I saw no to Cory’s begging face? We could give it a go… just for a few nights.
“Alright, alright,” I said after Ashton and Calum started begging, “We can try it, but as soon as I find a way to New Zealand, we’re gone. Okay?”
They all cheered and Cory gave me a tight hug around the waist.
I buckled him up and tried to get comfortable in my seat. I looked from boy to boy. They all looked genuinely happy that we would be staying with them. Luke I noticed was extremely shy, but was getting warmer and warmer to us.
The plane had finally landed and Ashton got down our bag. “This is it?” he asked.
I shot him a look that said not to talk about it around my brother.
We walked off the plane and as soon as I could see clearly, groups of screaming girls were running in our direction. Cody buried his face in my shirt and I picked him up balancing him on my hip.
Some of the girls were holding I love 5SOS signs or were wearing t-shirts. A few even painted their names on their faces.
The girls forced pictures and books with pens asking for autographs from the boys.
When the crowd finally died down and we were making our way to baggage claim, I exclaimed, “Who the hell are you guys!?”
“Don’t say bad words, Alana!” Cory scolded me.
Ashton chuckled, “Yeah, Alana.”
“You’re one to talk.” Michael said punching him playfully in the arm.
This brought on a snicker from Luke and Calum. “Are you going to answer my question?”
Luke was the first to speak up, “We’re Five Seconds of Summer.”
