Whale of a Tale

'Monster' Sturgeon'

A news story that could have inspired Spirit Fish was reported June 16, 2014. Two fishermen visiting British Columbia from Atlanta, Georgia, caught a giant sturgeon on the Fraser River. The fish measured close to 12 ft. (3-1/2 m.), weighed approximately 900 lb (400 kg)., and had a girth of almost five feet (1-1/2 m.) that would put a small tree to shame. Paul Jarvis, a 19-year-old university sophomore, needed help from his dad, Don, reeling in the huge fish. In a battle that took more than a half hour, it was brought to shore by the boat's lead guide. The fish was never removed from the water, but was scanned by the boat's crew who, with a mathematical formula, estimated the white sturgeon's weight.

The scan also revealed that the prehistoric-looking fish had never been tagged, a process by which the provincial fishing authorities keep track of the endangered white sturgeon population. Once tagged, the great fish was gently released.
