I'm not a child.
When my mother wrings her hands together, pacing back and forth obsessively, I know that there's something wrong.
When the policemen show up at my front door, I know that there won't be a lovely reunion between me and my missing father for quite a while.
When a man who my mother has been dating for two months suddenly appears in my house with his three children, casually reading the newspaper in my father's recliner, I comprehend and infer that our family is 'merging,' and that things are never going to be the same again.
And when my mother's van scoots on up near the curbing of a condo in the lower East Side, I know that we aren't here for someone else's house warming party.
We're here for our own.
"Well, Sam?" Mom asks me, as if she even cared about what my opinion could possibly be. "Don't you like it?"
"Yeah," I sigh, glancing towards the cracked sidewalks and shady characters hidden by the shadows. "It's... something else."
Mom purses her lips together. At least she's not completely oblivious to the hesitance in my voice. Ever since she met this fiance of hers, she's not been the quiet and reserved mother I knew and loved. I mean, I still love her - nothing could change that - but she just... isn't the same.
"We're closer to the beach now," she informs the two unenthusiastic members of her audience - one of them being me. "You guys can visit it anytime you wanted to, and it's all within walking distance!"
"Like walking is worth something so stupid." The youngest of my mom's fiance's children, Margret, folds her fat arms and rests them on her gigantic stomach. She chomps on her gum loudly, which was basically watching about ten chins wobbling and jiggling at once. She's a ten year old who weighs twice as much as I do.
"Okay," mom winces, carrying out the word and trailing off awkwardly. She strides up to the front door and unlocks it with the key she received, looking hopeful and even going so far as to saying, "This is exciting!"
It was only us girls here - Margret, mom, and me - because the boys are at some football game or whatever. Mom said that we were in for an exciting surprise - it was a surprise, but I'm not exactly excited about it. Without warning, here it was. My worst fears becoming a reality.
Change.

Hey! Welcome to my fourth time rewriting this here novel. If you're new, welcome! If you've read it before, thanks for even having the slightest amount of hope in this here book. Also, you may notice that some things are a bit different. Bear with me. It was to better the story.
Anyhow, I don't own the lovely art of my cover. I may be an artist, but a mere MARTIAL ARTIST. I'm hilarious, aren't I? (This is where you pretend to laugh).
Bwahahaha. This is an introduction to my story. It's going to be out here for a while - it could be a long while, or it could be a short while, depending on how much support I get on this single chapter - until I update the real story.
