CHAPTER ONE - WAITING ROOM
The boy seemed out of place in the room, like a photo in a group of paintings he stuck out in a slightest way obvious and yet still hard to notice on first glance. I had looked round the room several times before I actually saw him. His clothes caught my eye; the darkness of the black fabric was a stark contrast against the metallic silver of the room; rips in the sleeves that had been stretched down to cover his slim hands; and lines where rips had been hand sown back together showed like scars on fabric. He was scruffy to cut things short. Hair tangled and uneven in what seemed like a vain attempt at a military cut, long arms rested on longer legs, like a spider he was all limbs; a teenage boy that had grown to adult height but still lacked the bulk to fill it out. He was trembling as well tucked into the corner like a small terrier dog.
"its easier if you don't think of it as a test" I said getting up and moving to sit a few seats away from him. His head shot up, brown eyes wide in a blind panic then he calmed down as he saw I had kept a distance between us yet he still moved back even more, pressing himself into the wall.
I didn't blink at his reaction, he wasn't from here and most of the others found us hard to trust. My kind stood out more then the others as well, our looks reflected the drastic change we had gone through as a species; the electric blue eyes we all shared no doubt haunted many minds.
I feel the others in the room watching me, like the prick of a pin on the back of my neck nervously glancing at me ; watching us in case we tried something. We weren't known for violence but our talent scared others.
"I'm not frightened" he mumbled looking away. I followed his gaze, three other Bodracs were watching our exchange glaring out with entrusting and judgmental eyes , they were older then the boy I sat by he must have only been 12 , 13 at most. The boys watching were my age and held the domineering size and energy that all Bodracs possessed . Originally made to be bio-solders to fight the old world's wars , they now guarded the wall which enclosed us all.
I smiled "of course you're not" he wasn't here for the initiation testing but, for an advanced placement and development test.
The door slammed open with unnecessary violence behind me, hitting the wall with a loud bang that echoed through out the room. The boys face snapped up in that direction to watch whoever had just banged in behind me. I choose to ignore it. I could feel the stares of the other Bodracs watching me, they always starred whenever some entered the city they took every opportunity to oggle and eyeball our different completions.
"already hanging with the Leectros" a voice sneered over my shoulder. While the days of combat were over it didn't mean the anger completely went away. Hear the revolting word made me turn.
A dark haired Bodrac stared down at me eyes full of a deep hatred that stuck deep like a splinter in the hand that couldn't be pulled out. I rose to stand, while I was slightly smaller then my appointment us Ificans were the only ones who rose to similar height to Bodracs, I wouldn't doubt that it was one of the reason they hated us so much.
"have I caused of offense" I asked moving closer to his face, for people who took up so much space , they had a lot of personal space issues. He looked away to his crowd the others watching encouraging with silent eagerness for a fight I would surely loose leaning forward in their seats.
Turning back to look at me, a smirk of confidence now on his face he snarls, "Yeah. Your breathing my air, pest." And quicker then my eyes can pick up he pushes me backwards with full force. Right into the shy little boy who squeaks from the impact of my body hitting his.
Laughter bellows out from the Bordacs that had been watching the exchange and the one that had done the pushing. "I'm so sorry." I mumble, quickly jumping off the boy. "It's okay. Not your fault the baboon cant win a fight unless its against a girl." He says back, louder then I so the others can hear.
The other species in the room watched the exchange silently none wanting to interfere between the two groups, it would be like stepping between two pit bulls scrapping over a piece of meat. Only two other Ificans had been advanced to this testing room and they were both now in the pods being tested , I was outnumbered.
" I think you will find" I retorted smoothly " that this is Ifican air"
he opened his mouth to reply but seemed to find nothing in his hollow head
"don't try and battle wits with me boy, you will find no stream of intelligent thought to pull replies from." I wave my hand at him in a dismissal way. "Now, away with you go bother someone else." His nostrils flare, and the hatred lightens further in his eyes. Leaning forward he hisses, "We'll see who's the peasant after the tests, nester."
"enough children" a women appeared beside us her hand latched onto my arm, I looked down at her hand covered in a thick rubber glove, I scoffed , she thought she was protecting herself from the mild electric current that we could pulse our skin with. "your up"
following her into the room, to the test that would decide my future for the next three years. To the test that defined who we were in society. After all what was society without judgment and order.
