NOTE: This was used for my school english creative writing essay. (c) Alex Watson 2012. Ther was supposed to be a picture with it but I can't seem to upload it. The battle takes place on the streets surround the empire state building. The Vorg are an alien race I made up. if the name has been used before then I appologise and any relevance is purely coincidental

Private Olsen made his way through the war torn trenches, barracks and medical tents in the streets surrounding the Empire State Building to his squad who were in the middle of talking to the Commanding Officer.
"The world leaders have come together with a plan. We don't know why the Vorg have focused all their troops here to the Empire State Building but my guess is they need it. We can't let them have it." The commander yelled over the noise of explosions, gunfire and screams of pain.
Olsen looked up as a bunch of Vorg fighters flew overhead firing upon the snipers who were on the roof of the building.
"The plan is to evacuate New York and nuke the place so we need your squad to help the evacuation. We will have to hold the Vorg off with everything we have got. 4th and 6th division will stay behind with you to help," the commander ordered. Looking back, as he walked away, he said one more thing. "Boys, you must not let the Vorg reach the building at any costs. We have some intel involving the antennas on top of the building will open a portal to bring in reinforcements. That’s all you need to know. Get moving!"
"Ok let’s move out!" said Bradley Carlos, the squad leader, as he ran towards the frontline.
"Hoorah!" they replied and followed him.
As they ran they dodged explosions debris and other soldiers who fell, wounded. It was a horrible sight but they kept running until they reached the front barricade. The barricades were heavily fortified but the Vorg had over 90% of its troops focused here, the other 10% in other countries. Olsen grabbed a sniper from ground near a mangled body and took his position next to Montez, the medic in the squad. The Vorg were pushing through all roads leading to the Empire State Building but most of them were advanced on Olsen's squad.
"Remember we cannot let them get through. We will stop them or die trying!" Shouted Carlos above the noise.
They immediately opened fire on the three thousand + Vorg troops advancing down the road towards them. The Vorg returned fire from a distance, their bullets flying over the Marine's heads with little accuracy.
"*Choppers ETA 5 mins, Evac is on schedule. No more citizens in the city beyond the Empire State building.*" Came a voice crackling over the radio.
"Roger that," Replied Carlos. "Hear that boys?" he asked the squad. "Most of New York is evacuated, the last few choppers and boats are picking up citizens and troops. KEEP FIRING!"
They kept up the pressure firing at the Vorg troops and as the battle continued both sides took casualties. 4th Division and the snipers were wiped out, that left Olsen and his squad (2nd Division) and 6th Division to protect the Empire State Building. 6th Division was also defending the heavily fortified route to the evacuation zone.
Jets and Vorg fighters danced around in the sky above them like moths in a porch light. Suddenly a voice came on the radio.
"*Evacuation complete you are the only humans left in New York. Head to the evac zone ASAP, How copy?*"
"Copy all, we are on our way, out." Carlos responded while firing at the Vorg. He spoke to 6th Division's leader.
"Open the barricade we are evacuating!" He shouted as another voice interrupted the radio.
"*Be advised 6 warheads targeting New York, you need to go now. A chopper is waiting for you at the end of the evac road.*"
6th Division went through the barricade first as the barricade protecting 34th street fell.
"Bradley we have Vorg inside the barricade!" Shouted Dean Smith the heavy weapons expert. He turned to face them and opened fire.
The voice on the radio came back.
"*2nd Division the chopper is waiting for you 6th Division made it. Warheads are less than 5 minutes away, get out now!*"
"Negative sir! We have Vorg in the barricade, we can't let them activate the antenna. We are staying, tell 6th Division to go!" Responded Carlos, his voice had the tone of defeat.
Montes shuddered and fell as bullets slammed into his body. Olsen threw his last grenade and ducked.
More gunfire as the 33rd St. barricade fell and more troops poured in.
"*Roger that 2nd Division, we will make sure you are recognized for your bravery. Right now the millions of humans left are listening and watching on a news feed from a predator drone, do you have any last wishes or anything to say to friends or family? Over.*"
Carlos answered first as he spotted the chopper fly overhead 6th Division saluting them from the open cargo bay.
"Yeah, I would love a nice pint after we are done!" He joked throwing a spent magazine away and forcefully chucking a new one into the gun.
"I want my son to get the support he needs when I'm gone." Smith replied, his voice choking on tears. Carlos patted him on the shoulder.
The warheads were now visible speeding towards them from the atmosphere. Making the sky even brighter.
Smith took a bullet to the leg screaming, Carlos pulling him out the line of fire. Olsen answered his request.
"Annie, If you can hear me I left a surprise for you on the dresser in our room. I was going to propose once I got back but it looks like there has been a change of plan," He laughed, tears running down his face. The warheads had seconds to go. He felt his arm go numb and realise he had been shot. He ducked behind a bullet ridden concrete block. The fist nuke was so close they could see its name written on the side of the warhead. Ugly Betty.
"I love you Annie... I lo-..." His voice was replaced by the sound of an explosion and the news feed showed New York enveloped by a massive mushroom cloud, each nuke hitting a separate part of the city. Then the screens went dead as the Predator drone was caught in the shockwave and the radio spat out nothing but static...
3 Days Later...
A TV was displaying the news from a middle aged female reporter.
"After the destruction of New York city the Vorg are surrendering. With the Empire State Building destroyed, they could not call in reinforcements and are now on the run. Countries are now taking back their streets and reports show that 99% of all Vorg have been wiped out. We are slowly but surely rebuilding. Let us not forget those who..."
The report stopped dead as a woman switched off her TV. She got up, clutching a photo of Private Henry Olsen in her left hand and on her right hand was a wedding ring of the man she misses dearly.
