I woke up to the sound of yelling downstairs, at least that's where it sounded like it was coming from. There were two male voices, and I recognized one of them - it was Tyler's voice. They both sounded angry and they were arguing over something. I couldn't make out what though.
Standing up slowly, I made my way over to the door and peered out. No one was there. So they are downstairs, I thought.
I looked back at Sammie, who was still sleeping, then took a step out into the hallway. I crept over to the staircase and tried my best to see anyone. No such luck.
I crept down the stairs as quietly as I could without being heard. When I got to the bottom, I peered into a room I supposed was the living room. Past that was what I assumed to be the kitchen. That's where the voices were coming from. I could see one body standing in the doorway of the kitchen, with his back to me. He was tall and broad shouldered, with dark brown hair that came to his shoulders. I couldn't see Tyler, but I knew he was somewhere in there, because I could definitely hear him. "Get out of my house!" he yelled, at the man in the doorway. I scoffed to myself. More like mansion, I thought.
"Not until I get what I want. And I want it, now." The other dude said, and I could've sworn I heard him growl. Then he sniffed the air, turned around and looked straight at me.
If I wasn't scared out of my mind, I would've thought he was kind of hot. Wait- what!? Jeez Hannah, you're about to die and you're thinking about how hot he is? There is definitely something wrong in that brain of yours, I scolded myself. Great, now I'm talking to myself, I was about to roll my eyes at my stupidness, but I looked back up and saw the guy glaring at me. Tyler looked angry and. . . nervous? No, he couldn't be. I hadn't known him that long, but I knew he was too much of an arrogant, overconfident jerk to be nervous.
"Hannah, what are you doing?" He questioned me coldly. His eyes were glaring at me so hard, I felt like they were burning holes through me.
"I-I heard voices a-and woke up. S-So I came d-down here." I stuttered, looking down at the floor.
I heard laughter. "Is this another one of your dumb girlfriends?" The stranger asked, still laughing uncontrollably.
"No!" Tyler yelled, now glaring at the other guy.
"Hey, dude, it's fine. At least this time, she's pretty good-looking." He smirked, winking at me.
I blushed, but tried to hide it. No one had ever called me pretty before, except my friends, and the few boyfriends I'd had. But I'd never believed it. I'd wanted to hear my parents say it. But they never did.
"Hannah, go back upstairs to your room. Now," Tyler commanded angrily.
I obeyed and slowly turned around, walking back up the steps. I was on the verge of tears and I didn't need anyone seeing me cry. Thinking about my parents hurt too much. No matter how many times they mistreated me and broke their promises, I'd still loved them. I'd tried to hate them, I'd tried to act like I didn't care. But I'd always break sooner or later. They had that effect on me. They could hurt me as much as they wanted, and I'd still end up forgiving them. But they never forgave me. Even for the smallest things. Like the time I broke the $15 cookie jar, I didn't mean to. It just..happened. I apologized over and over, but all they did was yell at me at how much of an ungrateful child I was. It was the first fight I'd ever had with my parents. I was 5 years old.
