Everybody has read that one boring story about werewolves, vampires and romance. I'm here to tell a story far more interesting than those. The story of Jason.
Jason never got the most attention during his sophomore year at Kennybrook High. He was always sitting at the back of the class. Occasionally, he got into a little trouble with the staff. Like, two months ago when he locked Mr. Hansen in the janitor closet by telling him that it needed a new light. Or, 3 weeks ago when he put glue on Ms. Gerbers chair. These were just few of his many mischiefs. Doing these tricks did not help Jason at school. Mr. Hansen and Ms. Gerber went alot harder on him after that. So 3 months into the school year, Jason was off to a rough start. Barely passing in all of his classes. It was in gym when he got the most attention. Climbing the rope he managed to beat the record set by senior James Thompson. The gym teacher was most impressed and asked Jason to tryout for the football team this year. Of course he wanted to. But he is barely scraping by the grades.
"Work hard for your grades, and then you can work hard for me." said gym teacher, Mr. Joe Montana. Joe Montana was on of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game of football. Jason was so excited. Jason went straight home and told his mom not to disturb him in his room. Jasons mom had been alone since his dad had left her after Jason was born. He quickly grabbed a few books out of his bag and began reading. He couldn't concentrate. The words from the book kept on floating of the page. He decided to stop trying about 1 hour into his studying time which was supposed to continue till 9:00.
The next day Jason felt completely exhausted because of all the excitement that had happened yesterday. He had 2 weeks to get his grades up. 5 days later after trying his best to get his grades up. Mr. Montana had told Jason that if he kept his grades stay are what they are at right now. He will be able to play on the team. Now that he knew he could be on the team, he started thinking football. He has no idea how to play or the positions that you play. If anything he wanted to be a quarterback. Jason believes that the quarterbacks always are the most popular. If he becomes the quarterback it will increase his popularity status from loser to popularity peasant. Once you get there, you start getting friends. If you are on the team for a couple years you get increased to popularity king. Usually the king is dating the queen. In this case it is Will Summer dating Stephanie Silver. Will Summer has been on the team for 3 years. He plays quarterback. If Jason doesn't get the quarterback position the reciever is the second best thing. The reciever, well, recieves the throws from the quarterback. He also scores most of the touchdowns because the quarterback and runningback can't run the ball every time. Who knows by next friday Jason might make the team and be the 4th sophomore to ever make the football team. If he does make the team he can not embarass himself. That will bring him from loser to super loser. Nobody wants to be there. If you are there, you are stuck there. If Jason gets there he will be stuck with Carl Mathews.
One week later, Jason is in a nervous shock. The tryouts are in exactly 5 hours. Who knows what will happen. Will he get embarassed or really impress Mr. Montana? Will has made sure that he will be the quarterback so Jason has been studying the positions and plays that they will most likely test you on during the tryouts.
"I will be testing you on skill, durability and whether you do or don't know what to do. I do not care if you were on the team last year. I am looking for leadership and sharp wits!" exclaimed Mr. Montana at tryouts. Jason kneeling at the back of the other players is a nervous wreck. Will, standing at the front of the group is the first to congratulate Jason on being asked to tryout. Will knows what he is going through being asked as a sophomore too. Will seems to be a surprisingly nice guy to Jason. Normally the most popular are always picking on people and making jokes.
The group goes through some basic drills to see if they are conditioned. Will seemed to do the best, but Jason wasn't far behind. During the drills to see what position they might be playing. Jason happened t be really quick on his feet and good with his hands. These are the most important attributes to being a reciever. After tryouts, Mr. Montana points out all the skills for all the players and tells us that the team list will be on the main bulletin board by monday morning.
Jason is thrilled with how much fun football is. Who knew that what seemed to be a violent sport, isn't that violent in high school. For all Jason knew he had made the team. And if he didn't, he still had a great time playing.
Just another boring weekend for Jason. He spent most of the time at the school football field throwing a torn up football into the air and catching it 5 seconds later.
"This would be so much more fun with another player" Jason thought in his head. Almost immediately after he saw a teenager, not too far of from his age. Jason approached this character. Once Jason got closer he recognized him from school. It was Justin Campbell. He was a sophomore just like Jason. With the slightest bit of hope in his voice he asked him if he wanted to play catch. Justin nodded and started running onto the field. Justin was extremely shy and didn't talk alot in public. After playing catch for awhile, Jason realized that Justin had a very good throw. Jason asked him if he could throw long ones so Jason could practice. Justin agreed and as Jason ran down the field. Justin tossed the ball 50 yards into the endzone. Jason with an incredible catch started celebrating by dancing and bouncing the ball of the ground. This was Jasons first mistake. The ball bounced of the ground only to bounce back and smack Jason on the forehead. Justin ran to the endzone to help Jason up. Once Justin figured out that Jason was okay he started laughing. From this moment on Jason had at least one friend he could count on.
By monday Jason was standing by the bulletin board waiting for Mr. Montana.
"This is it!" Jason said as Mr. Montana approached the bulletin board with a list in his hand. Once Joe Montana was gone Jason ran towards it. Seconds after looking at it he ran to Justin.
"I made it, I made the team!" exclaimed Jason to Justin. His name had been on the list and his job was to be wide reciever. The wide reciever means you are on the outside and usually make the longest catches. The first game is scheduled in 2 weeks.
2 weeks later after practicing, working hard and more practicing. The team was ready for their first game. It was against the Sorun High Serpents. Fortunately, being the Kennybrook Eagles. It was pretty easy making a slogan for the game.
"Eagles eat Serpents" the cheerleaders chanted as they stepped onto the field. Jason stopped as the other players ran past him. Jason stood and gawked at all the people that were surrounding the field waiting for that one amazing play or catch from him. Will encouraged him forward onto the bench.
"This is our first game and is the starting point for the season. This is also against our rival team, so I believe that we have the fight in us, so all we need to do is get out there and unleash it" said Mr. Montana. Will won the coin toss for us and runningback, Robert Tunet, caught the ball at the 30 yard line running it 17 yards before getting tackled to the ground. At the 13 yard line Mr. Montana sends me out. Will gets the ball, fakes the throw and hands it off to Robert, Robert hands it back to Will. Will throws. Jason runs, runs, jumps and catches the ball advancing 30 yards and getting the first down. Will congratulates me on my first catch and we continue on the game. With 1 minute left the Eagles are down 18-14. We get the ball from an interception by one of the other recievers. Will says to do the hail mary. The ball is snapped to will. All the recievers run down to the endzone hoping to catch the ball that is flying towards them. It is tipped by an opposer in the endzone. Off the recievers hands and straight to Will. Will catches the ball just as time runs out. The game ends the Eagles win 19-18 with a catch from sophomore, Jason Albert. The whole team surrounds Jason. Will hands Jason the game ball as they lift him onto their shoulders. The crowd is going wild. Who knows this might be the start of a great High School Life!
