At ERP Scholars, we recently came across query from some students regarding the role of a SAP Consultant. Though there exist many articles online that throw light on the Future of SAP as well as its various modules; through this blog post we elaborately define the role that a sap consultant plays in a business.
The various projects that a SAP Consultant takes up in the industry include Implementation, Support / Maintenance, Testing, Upgrade and Rollout. Herein, it's important to note that the decision to handover a project to SAP consultant depends upon his expertise in the field as well as experience gained over time.
Hence, there are 3 levels of a SAP consultant:
1. Fresher (Certified) – During this phase of a SAP consultant, possessing good domain process knowledge along with SAP certification is a must. Consultants with 0 to 1 year of SAP project experience fall under this category. They are apt to be given the Support / Maintenance and Testing projects.
2. Middle Level – This is the next level wherein one needs to have knowledge of SAP configuration problems and solution after implementation. It is important for the SAP Consultants of this category to read blue print, configure and UAT (User Acceptance Test) independently. SAP consultants with 1 to 3 years of experience are a part of this category and thus are apposite for Upgrade and Rollout projects.
3. Expert Level – As the name suggests, only the expert SAP professionals come under this category. Hence, in this category SAP consultant need to have complete knowledge of all phases of Implementation project. While in process of reaching this category, the SAP Consultants generally have gone through the other project types (Testing / Support / Upgrade / Rollout) and thus could use their experience for best implementation.
