"This is your room." Hayley says, swinging open the heavy wooden door. White. Every single thing is white. There's not even much in here to begin with. The only thing in here is a white queen size bed in front of four ceiling-to-floor windows just like Kimiko's room but without any curtains. The walls are white, the doors are white, even the hardwood floor is white.
"Why is everything so...?"
"White?" she finishes for me. "Because you're new. I told you the room designs itself around your dreams and personality. When Kimiko and I first moved in, our rooms were white but the next morning when we woke up, it was perfect. All you need is one good night of sleep in here and you'll wake up with a great surprise."
"Will my room be able to change like yours?"
"Most likely, yes. Both Kimiko and I's rooms change constantly. My room's default theme is the blue sky one you saw and the night one is the night sky when I flick the switch. The room also changes due to my emotions. When I'm angry, there's shooting stars on my wall and the moon on my ceiling explodes. When I'm sad, all the stars get sucked into a black hole until all of them have disappeared."
"What about Kimiko's room?"
"Well she told me that once she finished college and got her doctorate degree and went to medical school, she was going to try to move to Paris and find a job there, but she died before she could even graduate high school. Since that's her ultimate wish, her default theme is daytime Paris. Her walls are painted with buildings from Paris, including the Eiffel Tower and the floor is made of brick and stone like the streets of Paris. At night when she flicks the switch, the sky turns dark so all the pretty lights from the buildings can shine bright. When she's sad, the city is raining and when she's mad, it's like an earthquake and all the building are crumpled to the ground like a pile of ashes."
"But I didn't see any of that when I went into her room." I say. "Everything was black. Her walls, her floor, her bed, her decorations. Everything was...black. What does that mean?"
"I...I don't know." She says softly, confounded by the information she just received. "Well whatever it is, it's not good then."
"Her bed was floating in the air and her eyes were pitch black."
"Maybe she's a ghost demon." Hayley suggests.
"A ghost demon?"
"Yep. A ghost demon. You might want to keep your door locked tonight just in case." And that's the last thing she says before she closes my door with a devious smile on her face.
Yup. I'm definitely locking my door tonight.
"Shane, I don't think this is a very good idea." My mom says as I struggle to get out of bed. I just got home from the hospital yesterday and my mom has been taking care of me the whole time.
"I'll be back in a little bit, mom." I say, slipping on my shoes. "Don't worry about me. I promise I won't do anything stupid." And that's the last thing I say before I grab my keys and slip out the front door.
The world blurs behind my vision as I speed down the road. The trees look like green blobs mixing in with the rainbow colors of all the random cars. My hands tighten on the wheel, corresponding with my locked jaw as my thoughts get the best of me. My head is splashing like a raging sea and I don't know how to cease this storm. My heartbeat quickens and my breathing picks up with each mile I get closer to Joey's house. I don't know what's going to happen. I don't know how I feel. Will I be happy to see him? Will I be angry at him for not checking on me? Are we even still together anymore? These are too many thoughts for me to deal with right now. All I need to focus on right now is this road.
