“Tell me a story papa!” Young Adam whined. “Please!”

The man looked down at his young son; he was deciding whether not to agree. Meanwhile Adam was giving his best puppy dog face. “Well…I guess it couldn’t hurt. But only because it’s your birthday tomorrow.”

Adam plopped down on the soft red pillow in front of his father’s wooden chair.

He watched and waited as his dad slowly sat down.

“Ok so what story would you like to hear?”

“The one about King Mitchell and his brother Orion!” He always loved to hear that story and always wondered if it was true.

His father nodded and began, “Well back during the glory days when I was just a young lad, King Mitchell ruled the land. He wasn’t a bad king but he wasn’t perfect, he had his flaws just like you, me, and everybody else. And nobody saw his imperfections more than his brother Orion.

Prince Orion had been born first but his parents had given Mitchell the throne instead. People say that’s when it started. Orion burned with jealousy especially when the king choice his wife, Oronatha. She had been a family friend growing up and Orion had always been affectionate toward her. No one knows why King Mitchell took his brothers love to be his bride but he did. This only made Orion’s hate stronger. After Mitchell had his first beautiful daughter well, Orion almost lost his mind. Orion couldn’t have children and his love giving birth to his brother’s beautiful baby girl, it sent him into a dark depression that nobody knew about. Nobody noticed…nobody cared…pour soul.” Adam’s father shook his head slightly and Adam wondered how someone could not care about a prince.

After a few moments, Adam’s father continued the story. “Sixteen years later, Oronatha died. She fell ill and passed in her sleep. Orion was so devastated he blamed the king. Everything his brother did seemed to make him even more filled with rage. And finally he decided to kill the king.”

Adam gasped even though he knew the story and had heard it many times. “But that’s his brother!”

“Sometimes brothers don’t act like brothers.” His father stated with a shrug.

Adam didn’t understand, he didn’t have a brother and probably never would but something about the partnership seemed sacred.

His fathers soothing voice snapped him out of his trance and he remembered the good part was coming up. “So, Orion secretly waited until one dark night when the moon was high and the rain poured so hard you couldn’t see a single thing. I remember that night, I was at the castle, just a boy on guard duty. I met your mother that night…” Adam rarely heard about his mother if ever. He looked at his father’s face as it lightened up. “She was…” He shook his head. “Uh, well Orion slipped into the king’s chamber’s and put a toxin into his brother’s wine. When people discovered the dead king, Orion said he must have killed himself out of grief of his wife’s death. People listened to his words since nobody had seen it happen…except the princess. She knew what happened because she was in the room when Orion killed her father but he didn’t know that. She was too smart to accuse Orion or else she might be murdered as well so she kept her mouth shut. Not that she needed to accuse him. He fell into a sea of guilt and then into madness. He was also crowned king which made his insanity even more dangerous.
