Prologue

We were just taking a little road trip. It was only supposed to be a weekend get away. They told me it'll be fun, and I trusted them. How could I have been so naive?

It was almost my sixteenth birthday. It was exactly one week away, so my parents told me we were going on a weekend get away to celebrate. I was beyond ecstatic because we'd never done anything together so naturally I was jumping everywhere telling my parents to hurry up on that Friday evening. They both wore worrisome expressions. That should've been my first clue. But of course I was only a dumb child then so I thought nothing of it. I didn't even notice the obvious signs like when mother was bouncing her leg in anticipation or when father bit his lip and was close to drawing blood. They looked scared. Of course they'd be scared. They were about to change a child's life. Ruin it in fact. Tear her apart until all she had left were her vague memories of what happiness was like.

We stopped at some grimy motel. They told me to wait in the car while they checked in. I thought they were protecting me because they didn't know what kind of people lived here - Boy was I wrong. We checked into the room and they immediately told me to go to bed. They said we had a long day ahead of us. God I was so happy.

That was my last feel of being content.

I woke up the next morning to an empty room. I thought maybe my parents went to grab breakfast - wrong again. I passed the time watching some t.v. but after about an hour, I realized something was wrong. I quickly got changed and was just unplugging my phone out of its charger when a maid came in humming. She screamed when she saw me, then clutched her heart and started laughing.

"Oh my, dear you gave me a fright." She said with a slight southern accent. "What are you doing her?" she asked after calming down.

"Me?" I questioned. She nodded slowly. She probably thought I was crazy, dumb, maybe even mentally challenged. I cleared my throat and explained, "Well I'm staying here with my parents because we're on a little 'vacay'," I smiled. "Though I don't exactly know where they are." I frowned to myself.

"Oh! I must've got the rooms mixed up. Silly me." The maid said.

"What do you mean?" I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion.

"Well I was told room thirty eight needed to be cleaned. Apparently the people checked out around two a.m. Now what crazy people would do that?" She chuckled. At first I laughed a bit along with her but then it all started making sense. They're so called excitement in the car, their protectiveness, why they've been acting so strange. They left me.

"Ma'am-" I spoke but got cut off.

"Oh don't call me ma'am. That makes me sound old. Call me Darla." She said and stuck out her hand out to me. I shook it slowly at this weird encounter.

"Sorry, ma'a- er Darla. But this is room thirty eight and clearly I'm still here so you must've misheard the room number." Right? I felt a lump in my throat. How could they have abandoned their only daughter right before her sixteenth birthday? I didn't notice I was crying until Darla came and hugged me. It felt nice to be in her warm embrace. My parents never hugged me. The most I got was a pat on the back when I graduated at the top of the honour roll in tenth grade.

"There, there sweetie. Its okay, don't cry." Darla comforted. It only made me sob even more. I try understand why they would've left me as tears fall down my face but come up with no reasonable explanation.

After a couple of minutes I calmed down and slowly unwrapped my arms from Darla's loving hug. I looked down at my feet.

"Now dear is there anything you want me to get you?" She asked as she rubbed my arm.

"No." I said as I choked back more tears.

"Okay well I'll give you 'til six to leave," she said in her gentle Southern voice "That's usually when they inspect the rooms to make sure they're decent. I'm sorry hun." Darla hugged me tightly then took her cleaning cart and left, just like everyone else.

Happy Birthday to me.
