If only Vivian was a deeper sleeper so she could sleep through her brother leaving his own family behind. But no, she was awoken by the sound of keys hitting the kitchen tile and the soft "shit" that escaped her brother's mouth a little past eleven p.m.. She sat up, blinking in the darkness before crawling out of bed and wondering down the stairs, towards the noise. There, she found her brother holding a book that was so massive, she was sure that if you combined the whole Harry Potter series into one book, it still wouldn't even match up to it. It was leather-bound and the pages were so old they were starting to rot. But that wasn't the thing that had her attention, is was that her brother was holding his keys in one hand, the other on the knob to the backdoor that was already halfway open, letting the late summer night air in and revealing a clear path to his convertible parked only a few feet from the door. He even had a bag sitting at his feet.
Vivian was no idiot, even at the age of seven her teachers were always going on about how far she would go because of her intelligence, so it was easy for her to put the pieces together and guess what her brother was doing. And the pure shock and the horrid realization that he got caught on his face confirmed her suspicions. "Danny?" she whispered, tears already clouding her vision. His mouth opened but quickly shut, he closed his eyes, no doubt thinking of a way to explain himself. "A-are you leaving?" she asked, following immediately after with "you can't! Mommy is going to make a cake tomorrow for you!" "Vivvy..."Daniel sighed, rubbing his eyes with his hand, "you don't understand. You'll never understand. Just go back to bed." "NO!" Vivian yelled, stomping her foot, causing Daniel to shush her and lean in close, whispering, "Vivvy, listen to me for once. Just back upstairs and get in bed." When he saw her glaring at him, tears streaming down her face and not moving he simply said, "I love you more than you will even know," and pressed three fingers between her eyes, closing his own. "What are you-?" before she could finish the sentence, she was engulfed in darkness.
Vivian sat up quickly in her bed, making her head spin. She had somehow made it from the kitchen to her bedroom, and the sun was up and peering through her translucent light pink curtains. Vivian had almost convinced herself it was all a horrible dream until her mother burst into her bedroom, not bothering to knock, with an exasperated look on her face, loudly asking where her brother was. What felt like a bolt of cold lightning ran down her spine, her mouth hung open. "I'm calling the police," her mother disappeared from the doorway.
Vivian remembered how the police had rushed over, questioning everyone of them alone. She had gotten a red headed woman who sat down and patted on the seat of the chair in front of her, signaling for her to sit. "Hi Vivian, I'm Officer Cherise, but you can just call me Cherise if you like." Vivian nodded, looking down at her hands that happened to be knotted together. "If you don't mind telling me, when was the last time you saw your brother?" Vivian looked up, "night time. He was leaving." Officer Cherise raised an eyebrow and scribbled down something, "did he have anything with him when he left? Like a phone? A bag?" "A bag, a book, and keys." The woman nodded before she asked Vivian more and more questions about what she had saw.
What felt like an eternity of questions and short answers lead them to the conclusion Daniel had ran away and stopped the search for him, hoping he would wonder home on his own. This, of course, had outraged her parents. Her mother sobbed into her father's chest while he pleaded, "Our Danny would never do that! He's on the football team! He has a job! Responsibilities! He wouldn't just leave us! I'm telling you, something is wrong!" Vivian kept her mouth shut, knowing the harsh truth.
