Chapter 2
Laurane and I had our first, third, fourth, and seventh period classes together, so we parted ways for our second, fifth, and sixth period classes. First period we had science, which was one of my least favorite classes. This was partially due to the fact that I absolutely hated the teacher, Mr. Gray.
Laurane and I walked into the classroom and took our seats (we were lab partners). Mr. Gray didn’t seem to notice that we had even came in to class at all, probably because he was too busy lecturing another student – Jesse Brooks.
Jesse was extremely good-looking, but he was also a huge player. Jesse was also a rule-breaker, so it was no surprise that he was getting into trouble yet again. In fact, apart from the fact that Jesse was a boy and I was a girl, we actually had a lot in common.
I wasn’t sure what Jesse had done this time, but Mr. Gray certainly was really angry with him. It seemed like Mr. Gray must have been having a bad day today. He apparently decided that Jesse had been endured enough of his lecturing – for now – because he chose to leave him alone and finally start class.
Jesse walked by our table and stopped for a second. “Hey there girls,” he said, “Are you going to Aaron’s party tonight?”
I was going to answer, but Laurane beat me to the punch.
“Of course we are, he’s my brother. Did you get invited?” she asked, looking at him dreamingly.
Jesse nodded and said “Hell yes I am, I wouldn’t miss it for the world…especially if you girls are going to be there.”
I noticed that Mr. Gray was giving Jesse a dirty look, so I said “You might miss it if you get detention tonight for not taking your seat.”
Jesse turned around and realized that Mr. Gray was glaring at him, so he rolled his eyes and walked back to his seat, not at all concerned.
Laurane had a humungous crush on Jesse, and she seemed oblivious to the fact that he was a huge player. Jesse also knew that Laurane liked him (it wasn’t all that hard to tell), and he liked to use that to his advantage. Laurane was really pretty, and when she did decide to drink, she got drunk really easily. She didn’t know how to handle her alcohol at all.
This made me start to wonder how tonight was going to play out after all. I was hoping that I would be able to relax and have fun tonight, without needed to worry about Laurane getting too drunk and doing something stupid. I figured that it would all work out (mainly because I wanted it to), and I promptly removed the thought that it might not turn out so good from my mind.
In science today, we were working with fire. My favorite. We were supposed to be using flames to boil a pot of water, but as exciting as that was, I knew that I could find a way to put these flames to a better use, I spotted Mr. Gray’s brand new laptop on his desk, a mere three feet away from our table – and our fire. I could make this look like an accident, easy.
I pondered over what I could do to the laptop when Laurane realized what I was planning on doing.
