Hinata was not himself lately, and it was safe to say that Tobio had noticed. It wasn't even faintly obvious. It was hugely obvious, and it, very greatly, pissed the dark haired male off. There was a rather unhelpful lack of focus on the elder male's part; Hinata had been a complete failure for the past week or so. He hadn't been able to spike a single toss that Tobio had dealt his way, nor had he even managed to catch the ball at all. It was like they'd gone back to square one; it was like they hadn't practiced on their techniques at all. It was infuriating, and the youngest male of the volleyball team had finally decided to properly confront Hinata. This really had to stop. That's why he conveniently managed to catch the flame-haired male on the way out from practice.
"Oi." Tobio called, hands on hips in a gesture of obvious irritation. It was pretty clear he was talking to Hinata- everyone else had already left. The orange haired male's posture immediately stiffened and he certainly did not turn to face the stern, annoyed 'king' of the court. "You can't spike to save your life- you can't even catch a ball, what is wrong with you?"
"N-Nothing, I'm fine. It's not my fault- you can't even toss the ball straight!" Hinata retorted, but that wasn't really true at all. "It's your job to get the ball to me, isn't it? You're just...not doing it right." He finished, voice trailing off quietly into nothing but a slight grumble. Kageyama wasn't buying it.
"No, my tosses are perfect." He said stubbornly. "I've tossed them right to you, and you've missed. You're not even concentrating. Either you tell me what's bothering you, or you man up and focus so you can actually hit the ball. Right now, you're being completely useless to the team."
That seemed to strike a chord, because Hinata's expression turned into nothing less than a pout. "I'm not useless." He replied, rather pathetically.
"Then what the fuck is wrong with you?"
Hinata paused for a few moments because he didn't want to explain anything to Kageyama. Firstly, he was the type with a really short temper- and the issue at hand was; Hinata maybe had a tiny little crush on the dark haired male and, really, how was the younger male going to take that? Hinata wasn't sure that 'queers' were the type of people Kageyama would want to hang out with.
"Toss."
"What?"
"I said toss the ball to me- in your hands. Right now." Hinata spoke rather confidently and the dark haired male couldn't help but sigh. Here he was again, trying to prove his 'fine'-ness. "I can spike it, just do it please?" He grew impatient after a few moments of Tobio not bothering to move and, finally, without any warning, the dark haired male gave him a toss. If Hinata was really in the right frame of mind and concentrating enough, Tobio knew he'd be able to spike it. He wouldn't admit it, but his faith in the flame haired male had grown considerably since they first met. In fact, when he wasn't acting like his head was in the clouds, he was actually someone that Kageyama felt he needed to have around him. Of course, now wasn't one of those times and Hinata completely missed, the ball falling pathetically onto the grass by the side of the path they were on.
"See. You can't spike."
"I can, do it one more time."
Kageyama clicked his tongue. This wasn't getting anywhere. "Tell me what's wrong with you, dumb-ass. You're not going to ever spike the ball with your head in that state."
"What do you mean? There's nothing wrong with my head!" Hinata protested, much to the further annoyance of his companion. Clearly he took that quite literally; he took it in the way that Kageyama actually thought there was genuinely something wrong with his head. Jeez, he was such an idiot.
"No, you idiot. I mean that there's something wrong with your thoughts. You're thinking too much, you can't concentrate. If we went out and did a real match right now, I have no doubt that you'd miss every opportunity to spike the ball."
"Oh..." Hinata was clearly embarrassed at his mistake, cheeks tinted a light shade of pink. "So what, you actually care about what's going on in my brain? You're not...just trying to get me to tell you so that it can be sorted as soon as possible and be fit to win matches, are you?"
Well, Kageyama wouldn't be lying if he said that was part of the reason. But no, he did actually care for Hinata- far more than he cared to show. Part of him wanted to say that Hinata had nailed the exact reason. Revealing his true feelings to the red-head was...something he found difficult to do, but despite how often Tobio said the wrong things, now was the time where he thought maybe Hinata actually needed to hear some...words of encouragement.
"No." He began. That was a start, it got Hinata's attention. The older male was staring up at him with those big brown eyes- completely filled with confusion. Was he really that bad that Hinata expected him not to care at all? "It would be good if you were fit to win matches. It's important to the both of us, but...no, I actually want to know what's going wrong in my team-mate's head so that I can help them out."
"What makes you think you'd be able to help?" Hinata asked then, catching the dark haired male off guard. Sure, he wasn't particularly brilliant with listening to people's feelings and understanding- but he'd do his best. "Promise to listen to me without the interests of volleyball matches as your first concern, and I'll tell you."
Tobio seemed to waver for a moment in his decisions, and finally he folded his arms across his chest, giving a slight nod. "Promise."
