Chapter Forty-Four: Burying the Hatchet

"Come on, Brittany!" Paige yelled from the other side of the door. "You have to be my partner tonight."

I had walked into the building today under the assumption that I was going to have a quiet evening up until showtime. I had been talking with Trinity and Xavier when Paige had shown up, holding the ring gear that I had borrowed two weeks ago and a pair of boots. Right away, I knew what she was going to ask of me, and at first, I had refused. But when she had pissed me off to the point that I would have punched her in the face, I ripped the gear from her hands and went straight for a supply closet, still not wanting anyone to see my scar.

The fishnet leggings were hard enough, but I had managed to get them on with hardly any time to spare before the match. In ten minutes, I would go out in front of a live audience looking exactly like a spitting image of my best friend. I would be labeled as a cheap knock off and laughed at. But honestly, I didn't care anymore. I had reached my breaking point weeks ago. If people would laugh at me, I did not care. As long as I didn't botch any moves and made sure that Paige was the one who picked up the win for our team, my job was pretty simple. Unless you weren't a wrestler and in this case, I wasn't.

Paige banged on the door again. "We've got five fucking minutes, Brittany. We have to go now!"

Realizing that I was letting my nerves get the best of me, I threw open the door and snarled,"Don't get your goddamn panties in a knot."

As we walked towards the curtains, I pulled my hair up into a tight bun, not cringing at the pain that I felt. Paige nonchalantly flexed her fingers, humming A Day To Remember song underneath her breath. Earlier today, before Paige, Trinity, Nikki and John had vanished for about three hours, she had pulled me aside and asked me if I would ever be interested in becoming her maid of honor should Kevin ever want to marry her. I instantly became excited and said yes. That's when she told me that they were engaged and that I was the only one, apart from her family, that knew about it. They had been dating for well over a year, so it was perfectly acceptable that they were going to get married eventually. While the date had not yet been set, I couldn't believe that Paige was going to be tied down at last. She deserved the best and Kevin was it.

"This cold air is making goosebumps come up on my ass cheeks," I muttered as I tugged at the black trunks.

"I think it feels good. Wait until we get out there. It's going to be hotter than fucking Hades."

"Temperatures don't matter to me. I just don't want to make a complete fool of myself out there tonight."

"Most people flop during their debuts," she was trying to encourage me, but it was all to no avail.

"But you didn't. You won your first match." It wasn't something that was to be overlooked.

"And so did you!"

I giggled nervously. "That was pure luck. I'm going to be in there with two of the lamest yet better women this division has to offer. The odds are against me. Not that they weren't before."

The roars of the crowd grew louder as we neared the curtains. I could hear Jerry, who had been given back his Raw announcement position, Cole and JBL trying to entertain the crowd with insights and speculations as to whom would win tonight's match. The whole world knew by now that I was Paige's partner, but the match was scripted, which meant that most of the moves that would be executed would be pre-planned. I had to look weak and a little helpless, but only for a few minutes. After Paige would be beaten down, she would tag me back in and I would have control until the near end of the match. That's when Natalya would take me into the sharpshooter. Then I had to crawl over to the ropes and perform the kicks to the face that I had become famous for, let Paige tag herself in and boom! Babyfaces win again. Rumor has it that there was going to be a special guest referee, but as for whom that would be, nobody knew. I hoped it would be someone good.
